I get this message every time I try to play. Not sure what the problem is, but I know that it never manages to update at startup. Also it doesn't save my user name information.

Could this be a problem with Windows 8?

Sounds like an issue with permissions. Try running the game with administrator priv's.

Ok then give me your password to your Administrator account and we can roll!

Nah just kidding, I knew you meant windows, but I was making out you meant Darkspace, but actually you meant a windows administrator. See what I did there? I bet I had you fooled didn't I? Isn't it interesting how a misunderstanding can be so funny?

Are you installing DarkSpace to Program Files?

Even if you run under an administrator account, it doesn't mean programs automatically run with priv's of that level. Try giving GCQL.exe, DarkSpaceClient.exe and DarkSpaceSetup.exe admin privs by right clicking on the file(s), selecting properties, going to the Security tab and ticking "Run with Administrative rights".

I just checked, and it's installed to C:\GameCQ. (But I knew that already. I'll give those files some privilege loving and get back to you.

Yeah, When I right click and say "run as administrator", it works just fine. Now to work out how to make it do that for those programs by default.

I don't see a right click option in the security dialog. It has a list of "Group or user names" and the options "SYSTEM", "Administrators" and users.

But I can't seem to change anything.

It's saying the owner is "Administrators" and that SYSTEM users and administrators have full control of it, GCQL that is. There's a special tick box for "Special permissions", but it's greyed out and is set as un-ticked!

Erk, I meant Compatability tab, not Security. My apologies.

"Run this program as an administrator" right at the bottom, tick it, hit okay, and it'll run them with privs as default.

Yeah it saves the configuration as administrator once I've done it once. Thanks for the heads up Pantheon!

Do you get any error messages when you try to launch DS?

A lot of people with Windows 8 have been having these problems. Setting DS to run in Win XP combatability mode seems to fix it most of the time.
