Alright,

I followed all tips, guides, suggestions in these forums for vista players. Nothing seems to be working for me. I click on the icon on my desktop, it logs into the lobby. I pick MV click play and boom "Error:Failed to start game!

I have zero anti-virus installed, all ports 1-65535 are open,kb944533 is not installed, I did update in the lobby, what am I doing wrong?

I did the administrator thing on all of the files, gah!

I did notice that I can load the tutorial from within the game folder by clicking on darkspace.exe and clicking tutorial. Now if I go into lobby and click tutorial it will pop up with the failed to start error. It even fails to start on setup. I can only access setup from within the game folder.

Anyone?

Heres my dx diag....

Make sure Client.exe, SmartUpdate.exe, and Server.exe are Vista Compatable.

Then once in the lobby, click Update.. Let it update, even if you've already update, it'll need to be updated. Then after that, press Setup and fix everything up. THEN it should work, hopefully.

That,

And one could also consider redownloading and reinstalling it, incase it's a corrupt installation.

I also use Vista Premium and there have never been any issues running DarkSpace on it whatsoever, I only ever had to run the darkspace.exe program in administrator mode, and thats that. Running it in XP compability wasnt necessary either.

Redownload -> Reinstall -> Update in lobby seems to be the way to go with this error, and then see what you have all your settings right in the "Setup" window and so on.

Then you might also want to make sure you are not trying to use the Beta client/GCQL, because that just wont work.

Try the given tips and come back here if it didnt work.

I downloaded the client software from each mirror. I ran in normal mode and in xp compat. I even went as far as taking ownership and full control of every file within the darkspace folder. And after everytime I ran update I would go into settings and make sure everything was set up.

Now, if I run the tutorial from the load screen, I can load up basic training and play to my hearts content. If I click tutorial from the lobby it fails on me.

I would click on update atleast 5-6 times to make sure I caught everything. The weirest thing is that when I try to run anything from the lobby it gives the failed to start error. If I run the .exe from within the folder of DS it runs perfectly fine. So I'm seeing that when the lobby calls to the program it might not have the proper permissions to run it.

Hell, I'm willing to let someone remote into my computer and try it themselves. I'm just sick to my stomach. I've spent 9 hours on this issue and still haven't figured it out.

Reinstall, But not to X:Program Files

X:GamesDarkspace is easy enough, since the "Program Files" comes with some advanced permissions that may not let you do something.

No, the Program Files directory does not have anything hard coded to it that would prevent DarkSpace from running inside it.

Shadow, check if you have UAC enabled or disabled. If enabled, disable it. I had a bit of a thought that perhaps DarkSpace does not request UAC approval and thus would run into a lack-of-permission error.

There is something fishy about this.

Actually I'll download the client and see if I can produce the same error myself and then circumvent it.

EDIT:

Coolbeans, so I can't make it crash but it actually works flawlessly.

Stuff done:

Download 50mb installer from the jack-online.co.uk mirror, install it in default directory, right click DarkSpace.lnk shortcut, Properties, and in the Shortcut tab, open the Advanced Settings window and check the checkbox with "Run in administrator mode" written on the right of it.

Double click shortcut, select "lobby", press red update diamond, wait for it to fully update, run Setup, adjust display settings accordingly, close setup, hit Play and kablammo, it plays and didn't crash.

On the other hand I'm pretty curious as to why would you be running in 1024x768 resolution unless your monitor is a CRT, when you have a high caliber video card anyway?

FYI - Vista doesn't work so well with games installed to Program Files (yes, it is hard coded into the UAC).

Try it in X:/Palestar.

I can't beleave it, the suggestion of installing it into a different directory worked. Something is going on with my Programs Files folder.

It works perfectly now. Vista permissions were what I thought it was and I do notic that vista itself doen't put restrictions on the Programs Files folder but auto configs folders within that folder, even running as administrator.

And I'm running 3 Acer AL2032WM's Don't know why it says 1024X768 I never drop below 1200

Cool, there is no reason to keep UAC on though, all you will get are problems with directories like this, it doesnt actually protect anything by itself from anything that matters, esp. with almost everybody having a hardware firewall.

And Jack, yeah, that's why people should just understand that while UAC is a nice and blinky big neon sign everytime you do something and denial of permission even if given, it should be turned off because DEP is actually what keeps the computer safe, without interfering with intended stuff.
