What version of windows are you running? Also, where did you download darkspace from?

I have this exact same problem.

I'm running XP, updated all my drivers when the problem first started, and no change.

The entire problem is that we can't install it. So, reinstalling it is not an option. When we click on the .exe in order to install DS this message pops up.

Error:
---------------------------------

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
CS: 0db1 OP:db 8a 04 0a c0

Chose 'Close' to terminate application

( Close ) ( Ignore )

----------------------------------

Clicking ignore also closes the program.

my suggestion:

* * * EMERGENCY NOTICE * * *
The following Windows Updates are causing GCQL to crash after installation.

* Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6/7 for Windows XP (KB944533)
* Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer (KB947864)

If GCQL will not load up properly after installing this update, you will need to roll back the changes with the Add/Remove Programs utility.

do that...and stop all XP updates

This didn't help. The two of us that have this problem can't even install the program, let alone get to this next problem. Thank God I didn't pay anything for this game... I only wasted my 14 day trial.
