This's been happening since the last update a day or two ago. Now whenever my ship gets shot down by an enemy vessel, the game stutters as it renders my explosion animation and comes to a complete halt when it displays the ship selection screen.

This doesn't happen for self-destructs or planet collisions, only for death from enemy fire. Or friendly fire, I haven't checked that yet.

I'm *guessing* that I have a 16mb ATI Rage Fury. I lost the specs for my hardware and that's the closest I could get from guessing when I needed to reinstall Windows. Of course now I have a problem with the game just freezing every hour and a half or so.

An ATI rage fury ? hmm.. had one once, embedded on my mainboard... and as far as I've tested it was total cr.. eeh... slowing down all the time when there were transparent things on the screen (like explosions). As the explosions even slow down real 3d accelerators (at least a bit) that may be too much for the old ati rage fury...

@POGO: totally wrong of course =:)

Let's forget about ATI-pre-Radeon cards
We don't speak about TNT cards either.

ATI Radeon -> very similar performance and price as Geforce MX cards.

ATI Radeon 7500 -> very similar performance and price as Geforce 2 PRO cards.

ATI Radeon 8500 -> better performance and far better price than Gefore 3

-------------------------------------------

I guess NVidea will react with yet another detonator that promises to be 50% faster.

LOL !
megacrap.
that's what I hate most about nvidea.

a) the promise isn't true
actually on "my geforce machine" the last +50% was a -2%

b) their drivers always get more unstable,
features get disabled, buggy ...
developers nightmare

once you have a monopoly, you can release any crap.
everybody happily writes workarounds.

---------------------------

end of rant

@Binary: "totally" wrong of course

1. the last "+50%" was a +30% for me (GeF3)
2. all pre-radeon's were cr*** - yes
3. all radeon's are much better (+/- equal a NVidia)
4. my ASUS 8200 (super-duuper-version) is about 15% faster than the "biggest" RADI. (8500)
5. they tricked around with the "number's" of the benchmark's (readed about a "scandal" with the Quake3-Bench somewhere - perhaps the PC-Welt)
6. POGO's word's: then any ATI in this game
7. the GeF3 and the RADI.8500 offers a lot more "juice" needed in the moment - so in general - where is the problem?
8. it looks like DS is not "loving" the ATI's

yes, that's true.
but no word about "geforce 3" only.
and no-one really got the 50%
simply a bloddy lie.

yes :/

kompromiß: in etwa gleich schnell

dunno, I didn't trick with numbers

agree.

not my experience.
tested DS with all major ATI chips.
(128, 128 pro, radeon, 7500, 8500)
no problems.

I have to admit that there have been big problems BEFORE ATI released new drivers at "XP" release time (end Oct)

P3 800MHz
384MB 133MHz RAM
ATI Radeon 64MB DDR

I have been playing since September 16th and haven't any graphical glitches yet and only a very few CTD's. DarkSpace runs incredibly well as does every other game I have.

Lol. Ok, it shouldn't be that hard to make sure nobody on my team talks.

I'm still running a 3 year old P3 450 mhz, 128 ram, with only a 12 gig hard drive!!! And I don't even have a subwoofer. The horror, the horror!
