Sporadic Lockups.... |

First to get the basics out of the way.....
Windows 98 SE (build 4.10.2222)
500 megahertz Intel Pentium III
32 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
Board: Intel Corporation SE440BX-2 AA719944-2
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: Intel Corp. 4S4EB2X0.05A.0005.P04 02/16/1
384 Megabytes Installed Memory
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 [Display adapter]
53.04 NVidia Drivers
and the most up to date Windows patches... checked it before I posted this.
The problem:
The client will repeatedly lock up during gameplay with an audio loops of whatever background music and ambient sounds where playing at that moment. Sometimes however the music will advance a few second then loop again. No curser movements and now alt tabbing are possible, this is a complete lockup that can only be left by restarting. Defragments and Scandisk have been ran within the last 2 days as by mod recommendations. But still this problem presists. Newest NVidia drives were also installed but nothing changed. Lockup times range from 15 minutes to one and a half hours on both HalOS and MV servers. Though I believe there was one MV game that went a bit longer then that...
I've tried running the game with and without Zonealarm Pro running with no change as well as many of the other background programs like MSN, the NVidia settings console with no perceivable changes....
I'm at the end of my rope, its totally frustrating to sit here while my comp goes through the scandisk cause it had to be reset just so I can log back in to play for another few minutes before another crash.....
I've been through the library of games that I own to see if perhaps its some sort of hardware issue, running graphic intensive games such as Dungeon Siege, Homeworld 2, and UFO: Aftermath without any problems (beyond the poor frame rates my vastly outdated rig strains to produce)
In short..... HEEEEEELLLLLLPPP *

I know for me personally, this problem was caused by a conflict between my SBlive and my USB cable connection.
I installed an ethernet card for my cable and those problems went away.
What kind of soundcard and internet connection are you using?

Sound very much like you have an IRQ comflict between your graphics/sound or sound/other device etc.
Goto Start > Run > type 'msinfo32'
Hardware Resources > Conflicts/Sharing
Check to see wether your graphics or sound share their IRQ's with any other device. (apart from ACPI IRQ steering)
If you find that your graphics is sharing with sound(or other card) then you have 2 possibilities:-
If you are using onboard sound or device(built into mainboard) then you would need to go into your computers bios and manually adjust its default settings to something else if available.
If it is a separate soundcard or other non-integrated device (PCI card) that is conflicting then just moving the card to a different slot may solve your problem.
I hope this helps.
Draf.

IRQ 9 Kingston EtheRx PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter (KNE110TX)
IRQ 9 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 9 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 10 YAMAHA DS-XG PCI Audio CODEC
IRQ 10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 11 NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440
IRQ 11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ 14 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ 15 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
thats how it looks and as far as you've said I can't see any problems with how it it currently configured. The soundcard is built into the mobo and the graphics card is in the AGP slot so either are moving...
The net connection is a Kingston Ethernet card running through a Motorola SB4200 surboard cable modem.

well that's just the BIOS which will be reassigned by the os anyways (except mass storage devices), u have to check after the system is booted up. this is an example from one of my comps:
System Information report written at: 01/23/2004 05:11:43 AM
[IRQs]
IRQ Number Device
20 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
20 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
16 RADEON 9700 PRO
16 Win2000 Promise FastTrak 376 (tm) Controller
8 System CMOS/real time clock
13 Numeric data processor
6 Standard floppy disk controller
4 Communications Port (COM1)
3 Communications Port (COM2)
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard
17 OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
14 Primary IDE Channel
15 Secondary IDE Channel
18 C-Media AC97 Audio Device
21 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
22 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
23 SiS 7002 USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller
19 SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
19 Adaptec AIC-7850 PCI SCSI Controller
since you are using win98 there are limitations to userintervention via softwaresettings but as i mentioned before try to hook up an external pci-soundcard to pinpoint the problem (in that case disable onboardsound in BIOS).
u can set the resources (memory range/input request etc.) maually in windows itself.
