I've found this to be cause by something trying to stay on top of the screen when DS switches resolutions or intializes the 3d-rendering. Like say an instant message pops up or you hit the start menu button.
I've also found the following programs to be culprits
AIM
Microsoft Intellitype Software (i could not run DS with this installed)
Trillian
Winamp 2 but not 3

got AIM trillian and winamp 2
had the problem ass well but it went away about 3 months ago
new federation makes me think about it
it was about the same time i modded the geforge 3 driver for bether peformance
dont know if it was that or that it was becous i switched from XP and win98 to 2K or about that i started to NOT use virus scanners and firewalls
or that it was becous i stoped rendering at that PC
all i know its not trillian, AIM or winamps problem
i normaly got trillian, msn 4.6, aim, yahoo, icq, winamp 2, winamp 3, and netmeating running when i play DS
but no more of that message anny more
i sugest if you have a GF update from www.nvidia.com
get the latest updates for windows inc. the service packs
( dont forget the new WORM buster protection )
if your only intention is to play DS and nothing more (like downloading just pure DS)
than i sugest to have a fire wall but NO virusscanner activated (active or passive)
and pay me 4 eurocents
hope some helps otherwist another use less post

I fixed this bug by changing my colors in windows from 32bit to 16bit

I posted this bug back in December 2001, when I first started playing DS. So don't except it to be fixed anytime soon. (Its been a known bug for almost 2 years now) It is caused whenever the Darkspace client loses focus while connecting to a server.
If you don't want it to happen, just keep alert to other windows popping up while you connect, and quickly click back onto the ds window.
I'm sure this bug is much older than December 2001, but I can't confirm it. Its probably been around since the game was created.

if ure running w2k or xp a solution would be to go into taskmanager -> processes -> client.exe - rightmouseclick and increase the priority. probby u have to test which one to keep ure system stable (i suggest above the interfearing programs). even if u have to do this everytime before u login it's worth it - everything runs faster.
ups after not before
might be a virusprob check the bugforum i posted it there if it is not moved
