rightey. spent about 20 minutes testing: Mines.
what i have found:
Pro's
you can now lay more at a time. realy good as yo can concentrate alot in 1 spot or make a nice looking line
bigger chance of the enemy hitting them
easier to use as a way of finding cloaked k'luth or making them choose unideal paths to you
Cons
barely does enough damage to hull a frigate (thats with a icc mine frigate, hit B once at a standstill, then PD'd them all)
stuck with a limit with restricts you to about 24 mines witch is barely enough to make propper minefields
can see them without a scanner
suggestions:
Make them do more damage
require a scanner to see
up the limit on the amount you can have layed at any one time [ This Message was edited by: iwanii *ojama blue* on 2009-12-19 03:05 ]

I killed myself in a scarab with my own mines, try again. Same goes for the mine frigate.

k'luth must have nasty mines. anyway, what about needing a scanner to see them? at the momen you can see them regardless and just PD them

Tested with the ICC minelayer dessie/frig; killed myself and dwarden (who was building next to me). Mines don't have intrinsic sig (I think), you have to mask them yourself.

I agree that mines shouldn't be detectable without a scanner. I've even wondered if bombs should be unaffected by ecm/eccm (it has it's pros and cons), but there's no doubt in my mind that mines should require a scanner for detection.
I also think UGTO needs a new type of mine. EMP mines are not worth using unless they can be made to do their systems damage regardless of armor/shields, and then of course they might be overpowered that way.

Hmm I don't know, I can't remember. But that brings up another problem: Autoleveled mines. If UGTO's only minelayer is a destroyer, it's not gonna do much damage no matter what.
Each faction should either have a minelayer cruiser, or just remove levels from mines so that a frigate's mines do the same damage as a cruiser's.

@Iwannii: You do know you can manually detonate mines by pressing shift+B right?

The ICC minelayer frigate is pretty sick
Also, the UGTO do have a minelayer, which is the minelayer frigate. The reason no one sees them is cos it sucks so much lol (On retail). The EMP really has nothing on the ICC or 'luth mines. So far, the ICC mines I've tested can pretty much blow up scouts and frigates point blank with around 2 salvos (2 X 6 mines I think). It also does decent system damage so unless the EMP mines literally disables systems with only a couple of hits, the ugglies will have a disadvantage when it comes to mines.
Edit: By the way, what happened to the homing-in mines? [ This Message was edited by: Nuds on 2009-12-30 11:58 ]

The minelayer frigate sucks as a minelayer. Paired with lousy EMP mines and the UGTO minelayer frigate is probably the most worthless ship in the game. That's why I said UGTO doesn't have one. Looks like Kluth will have the best minelayer, since it's cruiser level.
Homing mines are a must btw Since there's a small limit to the number of mines you can lay at a time, preventing a proper mine field, they need to be able to home in on nearby enemies. What's even more essential though is making them invisible without a scanner, for enemies. In live I've tried laying mine fields and AI just fly around them PDing them away.
