Bobamelius complained of something similar.
Fighters may (it appears) be bugged such that launching them crashes your computer.
Can someone with some patience verify this, or narrow it down to certain types of fighters or anything? Once I get a bit more data, I'll post a bug report.
Or I'll check it out tomorrow; I must sleep now.

I'll run emulated 32bit, see if it crashes the VM software, then get an error report, see whats causing it. My guess is somethings going on in memory, or the CPU. Game could be whoring the CPU to 100% so that the entire system locks up, or it could be writing lots of data to disk or memory to slow the system to a halt.

Trekkie_zero and I tested this today.
ALL UGTO and Kluth fighters will crash you upon launch, including those from defence bases. Tried all 3 variants for UGTO and Kluth
ICC fighters work "normally"
With the defensive bases as soon as you cross the planet defence threshold you lock up. For ship bourne fighters it is as soon as you press the button - either individual or full wave.
