when you activate the communication (pressing enter) you can chose to whom you want to talk... standard is team only, but you can also press fleet and enemy chats on. That way you can deside if you want to chat to all (enemy) or just your team, fleet chat doesn't work for my knowledge...

p.s. haven't been in beta for a while, it might have been changed since then

I think the commands that you can select (like Valerius said) are Fleet (GTN, PB, Evil, etc), Faction, Target, and Yell (might be the new /e, but the current /yell command isn't everybody).
And personally, I don't know WHAT'S wrong with our current chat system to make such a major change to it.

The reason for the changes is due to newer server code. Previously chat was limited to a particular server, but now chat sent using the /e command would be sent to several systems, and not always the same ones. /y is now the effective replacement, although it is limited by range. I think it is more due to difficulties and problems with limiting the broadcast range of messages when everyone is using that method (as people in different areas will only get part of a message or only half of a conversation).

ahh, i see the problem...
If you type an /e command (with current specifications) in the new MV in, lets say, Kapteyns Star. Then a Kluth in Lalande would get the message (message: Haha, gotcha now) and wonder what in the world the person is talking about....

Hmm... could divide the MV into different chat zones or something.
