DarkSpace has always been a game that's supposed to encourage teamwork and group play. When I first started playing, every time I was in a game I would see large squadrons of ships working together or fighting. Now when I play, I only see that occasionally if at all. Usually I only see a pair or trio of ships together for any length of time.
I think something that is impleted poorly is the way grouping works. I've spent more time in groups this week and asking other players about it. Very few people would want to group if at all (usually very new players or people who wouldn't be doing a whole lot while we were grouped). I've been repeatedly led to believe (and I do believe it) that grouping is a bad thing for most players. This contradicts the idea of teamwork and group play that DarkSpace is supposed to encourage and expect of the players.
To encourage more cooperative play and make groups a positive aspect of the game, I think we should get rid of all splitting of prestige in the groups (nothing is shared at all). From there, about 5 or 10 percent of what you earn or lose in prestige is shared as bonus prestige with the other group members. If you gain 100 prestige, you keep all 100 of it and the other members will get 10 bonus prestige (or lose those amounts). Additionally, this bonus prestige would only be shared with a group member if that member is within 2,500 gu of the player that earns it. Keeping within that distance allows for maneuvering in combat, fire support and front-line units working together, or an engineering ship and defenders working together.
I think changing the grouping system in this way will go a long way in bringing squadron-on-squadron battles back in DarkSpace without providing so much bonus prestige that it breaks the game.

I, for one, support this movement.

+1 I think this would fix the grouping problem and encourage team play as well.

there should be an overall reward for grouping, like that suggested by OP

I don't want to join in a group because when someone log off, their accounts ain't automatically removed from the group. The persistent of the group is the reason which drives players avoiding grouping.

I noticed that but never really thought about it too much. But I agree that it would be a good thing to change too.

The only reason I used to like the old old grouping is because you had a HUD of all the ships in your group to see damage status. ANd now with the new grouping the damn icons never go away and that is annoying.
We still need a HUD that allowes you to see all the ships in your faction on the main screen rather then going to F2 and the main screen also needs a Mini Map from F2 on it.
AND TURN OFF THE DAMN SOUNDS WHEN CHANGING SCREENS.

This idea would be ok IF there was
A) Longer range as smaller ship's and dread's dpnt want to wait for a station supporting them AND station's arnt supposed to be in front line battle.
B) Think it's a good idea...Just increase the range to maby 5k GU a fleet should never be 5k away from it's SS so yea.

I've made the necessary code changes on my local server, unfortunately this system was done explicitly by Faustus (who I've asked for input).
Depending on what he gets back to me with, this (or something close to this) will hit beta.
(This being 10% value of what you've done goes to other players in the form of Bonus Prestige)

These changes will be in beta sometime tomorrow.
: Grouping now only affects positive stats and will not share stats that negatively affect a player to its group.
: Grouping doesn't split 110% of a stat between all group members anymore, and instead gives each member of the group (excluding the player that did the deed) 10%.
: All stat gains are calculated at their correct rate and put into Bonus Prestige.
