cant u put something to make the game more realistic?
no need for it to be big.
something like a no. of natural electric storms that changes place that limits ships speed and prevents jumping and cloaking.
or an asteroid belt.
or even a dead black sun or a black hole that blows any ship near it.
please try not to say its using alot of loading time and stuff like that

A game must be playable by as many people as possible.
Not everyone has a PC that supports any load graph.
Too complicated if you're going to limit the number of people who can play.
An example is the issue of the shadows, not everyone can use their PCs as not handle it.
So developers not only have to take into account the use of server resources but also ensure playability for as many people as possible.

I've never see a real electrical in space... Only in Sci-Fi movies and TV shows...
That withstanding, we have reduced the number of asteroids in the game because of the lag issue it caused for many players. And the belts we have left have been blasted clean by most players over time.

Suggestion, then:
Have an asteroid belt that replenishes at a given time each day. The players' PCs will load the location of the asteroids and 'box' collision geometry, so the only server load will be calculating and responding to 'true/false' weapons impacts and existence, which will be acted on accordingly on the PC. There's no need to synchronize the rotational posistion or anything, se they should be static, with the exception of bowing them to bits.
Also, idea! Gravity well/black hole?

Can't you just make the asteroids like non interactive just a 2d picture that can effect a ships speed. or nebula that can hinder defenses.
what the OP was asking for was more effects to enhance game play a typical Dev response should be well look into it.
Also for the graphics excuse thats why most games give the option to reduce graphics so people who can't afford to adapt new tech can still play the game
none of this might not be real but neither is ships the size of planets and movable stations. and poorly developed planets so that excuse is getting old.

We cut back on the use of nebula's too because of the graphics lag many people complained about.

Shame they do not give negative signature like they use too, was always a good place to hide or plan strategic attacks against planets. Much like the hide and seek battle in Wrath of Khan.
