when i fire i hit ring ring ring. it makes sense with icc since their shield thing...but kluth and ugto.. well. no. lasers or weapons never hit ship itself (graphicly looking) but the green ring around it. thats also a bit of annyoance when i have straight line of fire, but still FF is i fire, cuz there is friendly green ring.
tis's not a complint or moan or whatevaaa, just im wondering if its possible to make there rings only graphicly showing damage, but weapons would hit ship instead. and that i could fire between friendly wings when in tight formation.
ps> there's this awsome daily screen shot, but its spoiled by this "weapons never touch the ship" thing..
just a tought

I think it's like this to have a lower server load.
Think of it: it's easier to calculate the impacts on the four armor arcs than on the ship model

That's true.
But I would prefer if the armor/shield were closer to the ship itself. Say, a rectangle, rather than a circle.

yeah oh at least eliptic or somehting. like ships that is long...not very wide...still is technicly wide. you can hit it right?
well if the server bogging is the issues, why not make damaga calculation on elipce sround ship not circle? would that be still easy enought for server and still give more sense of "reality"?

A retangle would look horrid. But like you say closer to the ship would be much better, but a more smoother contour shape of the ship would be nicer, rather than a circle thats three times the size of the ships itself.

if armor/shield ring were closer to the ship would make dodgeing something when you are moving towards or away from the fire easier. And would make cannon ships have to shot at the sides of ships to have a better chance hitting them, AKA tatics

What, you mean scouts with smaller rings than this would be able to dodge incoming fire?

they are already hard to hit cause of their size and speed

wow...hitting the ship instead of the rings...
it would take a longer loading time but it would make the game more realistic....i mean if people spend time on making the game more realistic and challenging...u know with missions that come automatically and all...more people will play the game...u know like good publicity

Oh wait, the "duh" factor you are pointing out isn't feasible because this game is run by a group of volunteer developers.

I was told way back when i suggested this, that the game engine is not capable of making cube hitboxes. And that smaller hitboxes would throw off balance. (this was when the staff still liked me meh)

A circle if easiest and has less server load because you just calculate this: Any projectile that reaches X distance from Y (ship center) point hits.
An oval or rectangle would require more server load with the more complex settings.

Remove AI all together and server load problem fixed. Or at least restrict them to a few systems only near the home sectors.
I recently come back after a year or so absent, and the AI population seem to be the most mentioned topic while fighting other players in MV. But sliding slightly off topic I doubt its more server load but more a coding/dev time/testing issue.
