There's a fence around our portion of the universe because the guy next door doesn't want us flying our ships all over his lawn.

| Ya it would be more like 3 dimensions. you never go anywhere due to that the 4th dimension "time" is not allowing you to move inside the other 3 dimensions.

You laugh all you want, but in my perspective drawing class, somebody asked if we would be learning how to do 4D.....
draw faster?
I used to fear that the future was lost. Having gone back to school, I no longer fear it, I know it is so.

It would certainly make for more interesting gameplay if you have to watch your back, sides, bow, ventral, and dorsal regions... I can see it now! EADs around the circumference of a planet and a bunch of trannies rushing the invaders vertically from below. =D It would, however, require a new navigational mechanism and maybe new rules mediating what happens when two ships intersect- I think there should be at least a little damage, or a bounce-off effect, even in the 2D space.

1. im not saying its like a sphere... our own universe is actually doughnut shaped tbh....
2. im not saying it still wont work on a 2d plane, its like one of them arcade games where you go out one side and come in the other...

Due to the game mechanics, and the distances involved, this would likely never be used! There are far faster and better ways (gates) to get at your opponents. Neighboring servers are closer, and require you travel less distance then to try to go over the map boundaries.
Even if it was viable, I doubt we'd ever see it, as it'd likely fall under "too much time for too little gain"

If space were a sphere we are stuck on the outside of, then this might make sense (dimension counting problems notwithstanding), but... otherwise:
Nope.
