Two very simple ideas, a small map which updates every second/every 5 seconds and shows things in the area. Friendly ships and platforms shown as green arrow, enemies as red. Platforms shown as a green or red cross, and planets as a solid green or red circle, whose size is proportionate to actual size. Size of window may be 200x150 pixels, attached below the server duration bar. Multiple resolutions, 1000x750 (combat), 2800x2100 (medium) and 4800x3600 (large).
Why? No reason, other than helping players not tapping into F2 to see if something is nearby. Guidance for seeing what the enemy formation is, maybe. And most of all, a cool feature.
Second idea, a list of some objects in the system. 2 closest player ships, the closest shipyard planet and closest planet with depot. Similar for enemy contacts, 2 enemy players, closest 2 enemy planets. Lastly, 2 closest gates and closest 2 transfer gates. This gives a multipurpose list of 12 objects, usable for quick reference. This list may be below the minimap and server duration bar, depicted by icons similar to the grouping list.
Why? To enable quickly interacting with useful objects in the system, and further reduce dependence in the navigations window. And a cool feature aswell.
Aesthetic and semi-useful changes, somewht appealing I believe. Comments and criticism welcome.
(The contacts list shouldn't take a lot of time to code, its a combo of nearest-ally function and grouping list, just more in number and automatic.)

Actually what i really need is a radar overlay.
I suggested something like this before. We already have those F4 to F8 overlays... why not include a radar?
So I don't need to hit F2 to have know my tactical situation.

sounds good. as you cant see if ur gettin sploded in F2, or check ur damage.

a minimap radar would be really nice. Adding a damage indicator next to the hull for armour would be nice too, see each idividual armour plate damage is nice and all, but i would still like to see the overall damage.
