I would be nice to see the game get updated to like Direct X 8 or 9c. Would help a lot in making the game more appealing to newer players if it didn't look like it was 5 years old. I know you want to keep the system reqs down but really? Most players have decent systems now, if there system is running Vista or Win 7 there systems can run a DX9c game. If you bumped the system reqs for this game up over 1ghz it wouldn't hurt anything! Giving this game a nice overhaul would infuse a lot more intrest as well.
For older computers that are from the dinosaur age you can put settings and such for them. Like low settings would be DX7, med and high could be DX8 and ultra high could be DX9. That way you still cover a lot of vid cards both old and new. Also would give the players who do have high end systems something to look at. Right now the game looks good, but if those models and textures were in DX9 it would be just outstanding. Battles would look 20x better with all the effects that could be added.
I have no idea what the Medusa engine runs if its Direct 3d or open gl. Just saying that it would be nice to see the graphics boosted. Maybe make this something for DS 1.6? Maybe have it so you would have to sub to use those higher settings? That would generate more money for the game by doing that. Just a few ideas about ascetics for this game.
Note: Was thinking of this because of the games DS is having to compete with now. Like STO and EVE. EVE offers a HD and Normal download for there game for the low end and high end computers. Would be nice if DS did this too.

Going by the questions asked.
DS already uses some DX9 features, that is why DX9c is required.
I don't know witch one's but i agree that there are a lot more features in DX9 that we might put in the game. but i'm not a 3D specialist, i'm already happy i can make decent 3D models..
About the minimal specs, well i tested 1.5 BETA on a P3 800mhz with a Voodoo 3 and 512mb and it ran, not extreme smooth in combat but decently enough to be able to play. The few workstations i had who where below those specs didn't seem capable to run it, or run it smoothly.
At the time with discussing it with drafell and jack we changed it from 350mhz 64mb to 700mhz 512mb. As well as removing win 98 & Me from the min spec page..
I know it might seem weak but we know it worked on these machines, i might re-install that voodoo 3 and check again. but i think ill rather dig up my P4 1.8Ghz GF2 64mb and see if it runs on that so we can raze the specs to ~1.4ghz. and thinking about it i think we can drop the win 2000 support, seeing as its being phased out, plus there are some issue's with DX9
DarkSpace uses Direct X. to bad in my opinion since porting to other systems is much easier to do when using Open-GL.
In the "DarkSpace Setup" players can pick High, Medium and Low quality, and trust me low quality is low quality. you should try it yourself.
But paying for the higher quality? I know a lot of nubs that want to pay good bucks for quality eye-candy but i don't think (unless darkspace gets the whole eye-candy upgrade) we will see this pay for quality happen.
Respectfully
E.

Indeed, DarkSpace already uses DirectX 9. Some performance benefits from the 9 API made us change a few years ago. Using shaders and the like takes time to implement, and quite a while to test.

I really just had no clue as to what the game used. Since it already dose use DX9 thats good, means you guys can get the pretty's up and running eventually. If you did to a eye candy upgrade I would suggest it be for the subbers only. This would make those nubs who want to see a real pretty game already (so unsubbed would be what we have now) be even better. I mean just look at STO that game looks absolutely BEAUTIFUL in combat. Especially with the shield effects going off and the flair on the beams. Would be nice to see DS do this too, you could add those things without breaking anything already. Just set it so the game (user side) plays those animations, the game never changes (server side). People like to look at pretty things when playing a game, DS should be no exception.

Allittle of-topic here but When I change my Vid card to AMD Api card with 512Mb with shader Model 3.0 I had to change the graphics setting several times to get it back to normal. Any Ideas why?
Symtoms:
COuld not open client
Client would shut down but launch would say the game is running.
The game would be to big or to small.
Display Driver would fail and recover then crash mt computer.
