Is it possible to have default setup options to avoid the all to common problem of newbies not knowing what to do when they get the self-explanatory message?

I've tried this, including a config.ini that just has windowed set, but there is more to it I think, because using it on another computer will still get you a "failed to initialize display" message
in windows xp clientsetup starts up automatically if it is the first time running the game, vista however is more of a pain in theass

These days a lot of games are playable trough windowed mode.
And many people play in windowed mode because alt-tab has a reputation to screw up..
So why not set "windowed mode" as default.. If players want to go max screen they have to go into the Client setup.
Only thing needed is to set the windowed mode default starting size a little larger than it currently is.. its 600x480 currently if i recall..
3 cents, for 1 seconds of thinking.

windowed mode also comes with the maximize option, so its a solid idea.

Right, but even with windowed mode set in config.ini it will still fail to initialize display unless it was setup by DarkSpaceSetup.exe on that computer

Another option would be to integrate darkspace setup in the original darkspace installer...
When you install darkspace you will be asked about resolution, quality, audio options ect...
