This may have already been put out there.
I think the normal ingame display could use a few changes. I think it would be useful to be able to see the condition of the ships of people in your own team without having to press F2.
With grouping this was possible but it would be nice if it was available all the time.
Also rather then a little bar to show damage have the icon turn colour green to yellow and then shades of red and then the more damage the darker the colour.
Anywho just a suggestion and i will likely get flamed for it.

well it is a good idea,
For hull it could be just a simple % under the name of the target or behind it
but i guess Armor and Shield might be a little harder to implement.
Still nice sugestion

Personally I want to be able to scale the UI.
You know, bigger view, less heug icons.
Thats just me though. I can think of a plethoria of technically useless but interesting fizzwizzy gadget doohickys that would make the UI look "better" but they're unneccessary.
I wouldnt mind this though.

actually dude, you have a good idea here. i would like that as a supply station, rather than clicking on each individual person, have the armor/hull values shown under the name.

This is where WoW = Win.
Their Raid/Group interface is one of the best there is in current MMOs.
The DS UI could do with an overhaul, too.

I'm just looking for a more active display of what is happening without having to change screens all the time.

This is an interesting fork.
One one side, you have people who enjoy the realism of not knowing at a glance how damaged a friendly ship is - I know I do. If I really need to find out, i'll target them, or check my f2 screen for a brief second. I really don't think having a floating bar for armor+shields and then hull above them would look good, or make much sense.
On the other side, you have people wanting to know more knowledge of the battle around them. I mean, it is called "Tactical" for a reason, so one could argue that friendly ships would send data to each other above their current state of damage, and even energy, signature, et cetra.
So, really, this is an interesting idea that merits more debate.

It would make supplying easier as what some have said. other than that im not sure if theres really another major advantage. The only disadvantage i could see from this is extra lag, however that could easily be fixed.

Simple fix to the "group" thingy... just have it list anyone within scanner range of your ship.
Example
said icc dood jumps into a battle with ugto and icc.. icons for icc ships and ugto ships pop up on the right and left, now the ugto ships status WILL NOT BE LISTED in the hud icons (think dropdown list based on class.. push the plus on dessy and see all the dessys in range folder style)
Now the way this would work is.. that you would have one command ship watching everything and teling the sups who to heal if in range (based on damage)
Not only would this make it easy to tell who is hurt but it will show the sig and energy levels (sig wil be a number based on 5's) (and power will be a bar with no % or numbers ;P)
now you wont get an exact readout on the ships status... more or less you see it in bars representing 10% each
shields and armor stack so you have 50% of the bar representing shields and 50% representing armor if both are present
same with varius icons representing actions (ie if the ship is taking damage it will flash red on the icon thingy, if getting repaired it will flash green)
allof this info make it easy for commanders to, well, command

It is my understanding that anything within 5000gu of your ship already sends this data to your client, it just isn't presented until you focus on that particular ship.
Devs? Warm? Cold? Hot? Frigid?

| This makes sense, however i know this can be hard, but a average armor & shield bar (graded at 25%) in the nav should be a little easyer.
