As platforms will be in next version, let's make SYs orbital platforms. Why?

1. Makes more sense. I doubt it would be practical for a dreadnaught or station to dock with a ground based SY.

2. The SY could be destructable. As it takes damage so do any ships inside it. This would help with the SY exploiters.

3. SYs should not be scrappable unless empty. It's annoying when I have a modded ship in a SY then someone scraps that SY and leaves my ship stranded...

i like it as long it can take some hits with out being killed.


few Q's
can it fix it self over time?
a player has to fix it with reloads?
can planet depos can fix it?
is it bound to a planet (cannt be built in the middle of nowhere)?
does it act as a SP (imo it should)?

I haven't thought the idea out fully (that's the dev's job ) but.

1. It should be a fairly robust structure with its own defences. UGTO SYs should have lots of armour, ICC's should have great shields and K'luth's should have self-repair and cloak ability (which brings to mind my concerns about the upcoming 100% effective K'luth cloak. But that's another post...)

2. Should be repairable by players and ground based depos as well as acting as a depo (super depo?) itself.

3. SYs are extremely important strategically, yet it seems to me that they can be built at the drop of a hat. I would like to see them cost a great deal of resources to build - as befits their importance. The loss of a SY should be a major blow to a faction.

4. They should only be able to be built in orbit of a planet. The rational for this is that they would take a great deal of maintenance to keep running and only a planet would have the resources to support it.

A question of my own. When something is repaired by a depo, does that consume faction resources or is the repair free? I think repairs should cost resources if they don't already.

It occurs to me that the game would benefit by putting other structures in space too.

One that springs to mind is the Interdictor device. It could be both an orbital platform as well as a platform that can be built anywhere in space. This would increase its strategic value immensely and natural the cost of building them should reflect their importance.
