Kat here, I forgot my password, but this will do for now,
I think that this game could be made a lot more interesting in terms of flying technique with a single simple change...
WE currently have the ability to turn egines on or off... turning them off reduces signature and removes for th emost part the ability to accelerate/deaccelerate, however your ship still has steering
OK, WHat if:
When you shut your engines off, just lik enow your sig would go down, and you would lose acceleration/deacceleration, however you would not have the ability to change direction, your ship would travel along the vector it was heading when it shut its engines off, however you would be able to change your ships orientation without affecting direction...
That way you could make your ship fly sideways and backwards like in "real" space flight

This has been bandied about before.
I like it, personally. However...
It sort of conflicts with Faustus's mandate to keep play controls as simple as possible. One way we do that, is to severly limit the game physics.

well remember that the backwards claw would not be able to maneuver unless it turned its engines back on... in which case it would rapidly deaccelerate the instant the pilot throttled up
So if you're coasting backwards trying to ward off pursuers, that means that you are travelling in a straight line which fairly well levels the playing field unless you are fighting say a combat destroyer...
in which case the playing field wasn't all that level to begin with...

turning off drives also removes your ability to gain energy.
So why u'd want to turn them all off I have no idea.

So that you would be able to strafe a target with all your primary weapons while moving along a tangent to the targets vector
You'd be able to blast by at full speed while still keeping your target in your firing arc... yes you would lose a lot of power generation, however this is the trade-off you make for being able to fire backwards at puruers, and other such conveniences... it'd make for a more interesting variety of flying styles...
Right now we basically run in circles around one another...
