When you first join the Metaverse, the trick to finding the action and spawing in the middle of it is asking your fellow players where. Unfortunately, at the present time, that isn't possible at the ship selection screen, as you can only talk to your fleet over, oddly enough, /fleet.
The default chat needs to be faction wide so these requests for information can be quickly and efficently made by those who are not only not in fleets, but those who have no fleet members online. There are other reasons, but they aren't worth listing, so I'll just leave it up to the best, most initiated [Dev] team in the whole wide world!

that, or have a number over each system displaying how many clients (friendlys only) are in that system. quick way of seeing where the bulk of the fleet is
