About all those battery suggestions, those things are actually used today and would make a nice structure.

Pumping Power Plant

Only available on fertile Planets due to the need of free fluid Water, the basic design concept of those Structures is so old that its origin is lost in the nebulas of time. During Periods with high Power usage, these Power Plants operate like regular Water Turbine Power Plants. When there is surplus Power available though, the Turbins can be reveresed, using Power to pump Water back from the lower into the upper Storage Basin, thus basically operating like a really huge rechargeable accumulator that can be put into operation to produce output for the power grid in a matter of minutes.

Why should something that utilizes the highly inert liquid known as: Water require more space than, say, a Fusion Reactor?

Which would you rather build a suburb next to? A Hydro-generator or a Fusion reactor? If the Hydro-Generator blew-up, what would be the worst that could happen? Maybe your lawn gets watered?

And again Jux missed the point completely..
Are we surprised?

Fusion Power Plant:

From the schematic you can see its going to be about the size of a fission power plant:

And this is one of storage Basins of a Pumping Power Plant:

Which seems larger?

i have seen such kind of gen... you need a really hugh first water storage and a second one equally hugh... both of this must have at least about 100m of alltiude differenz so the water have enouth force to power the gen..

and even underground you do need a really big structure to handle this...

Oh, I'll admit that the Fusion Power plant is smaller, no disagreeing with that...but then again, compare the Fusion Power plant with the large body of water...which is more likely to have residential/commerical spaces springing up on the property lines?

Well...I don't see anything near the Powerplant 'cept some trees. . . I used to live a mere stones throw (cause I threw rocks at it...so I know) from a Hydro-Dam.

Sure...big pool of water...a lake even. Large radioactive wasteland.

Don't really matter since on a planet, the structure is either going to appear as a single Red diamond, or a single green diamond...

In which case I would say, good idea.

Blasphemy!

If that happened, then I would be wrong!

(I'm confident that the [Dev] team does not want to see me proved wrong and will take the proper steps to ensure research made into Double-diamond buildings will "Disappear")
