I was sitting inthe lobby to day and Sven mentioned how he lead severl kluth that had him on follow to their deaths by crashing into a star. One thing led to another and we eventually got to incidents of us crashing into planets. Well I got to thinking: "Shouldnt a Dread the size of Luna, upon impacting with a planet, do SOMETHING traumatic to the planet surface and climate?"

Perhaps you've read my shortstory where a dreadnaught slams into Mycopia during the battle of Luyten, turning the lush terran world into the Ice Planet we all know and cap. Or youve read about the asteroid that smashed into the Yucatan Pennisula 65million years ago, initiating a mass extinction. Both of these outcomes were brought on by somehting called a "Nuclear Winter", where all the dust thrown up into the air is so numerous it blocks out the sun for long (and I mean long like years long) periods of time. Without the heat and light from the sun, oceans freeze, plants and animals die, the world is buried under ice and snow.

Now, in Darkspace when any ship crashes into a planet it explodes, deducts some pres, gives you a nice Planet Collision point, and the planet goes on as if nothing as happen. This is just [/b]WRONG!![/b] When a large object smashes into a planet it should have lasting consequences. All structures under the impact zone should be damaged, if not outright destroyed. And on terran planets, the dust thrown up by the impact would initiate a nuclear winter. Eventually the planet woud turn into a Ice planet, and any population not supported would die off.

Now I know this seems to scream EXPLOIT!! But there are some easy solutions.

    1) Planet Collisions should cost more Pres. I can't imagine High Command being to happy about you smashing their brand new dread into a planet.

    2) The only ships that would have any significant impact would be dreads and stations, or perhaps only stations. Only these ships would cause a nuclear winter.

    3) With the single plane of movement in DS, only planets along the equator would have any chance of being at ground zero.

In reference to #3 on the list, each ship class would have a larger area of impact. Scouts and frigates and destoyers would be one square, cruisers would be two, and Dreadnaughts and Stations would each have a 3 square blast area.

Please state your thoughts/comments/suggestions concering this idea and try to keep flaming to a minimum.

Anything that permanently changes planet types is a bad idea for obvious reasons.

Well the only planet change that could occur is Terran to Ice, which really only has a 20 or so population difference if I'm not mistaken. Nice response time BTW.

Edit: Though also perhaps desert should be vulnerable to this change, they have alot more dust than a terran planet I would imagine. Plus the populace might like a change of scenery.
