Since I've been a mod, I've enforced a policy of no gate camping. Seemed simple before the metaverse, but now it's not simple at all. Most of the jumpgates are right by planets and are thus more easily found by all. So my question is 'What constitutes gate camping now, and should we (mods) put a stop to it when we see it happening?' I really could use some guidance here from an admin.

Gate location need be altered....(really NOT funny enter gate and be under fire of 15 bases * 3 missiles....hmmmmmm

plus gate (starting one) =
1st) disable chance enter Gate for different reaces...

2nd) put Laser and Missile defence on it

3rd) put ECCM on it

etc

Since I am just a retarded new mod, I'll put in my opinion...

First off, Gate Camping is obvious, but here's what I believe it to be. Enemy's sitting at a jump gate destroying other ships as they are first launched. Now yes, this is a problem, but there are some ways to fix this.
1) Make the jump gates away from planets, far enough so there can be a radius in which you can implement a code (I dont know if this is possible or not) that warns enemy ships to remove themselves from that area. If after a certain time (lets say 20 seconds or so) they are not moved, they will automatically self destruct.

2)Another possibility is to create drones of some sort, and make them very powerful and impossible to destroy, and place them near the gate, arming them with only laser weapons. This way if someone decides to camp, these drones will destroy them. They would only be about 50 gu outside of the jump gates and would only be able to fire lets say 100 gu away...

I probably have more stupid ideas, so I'll post more later.

lol 50gu..... when dread camping near gate he is 300 - 750gu far ...

area under watch of gate defence systems must be 1000 - 1500gu....

i think that gates must be far as 5000gu from nearest space object ....!

Gate Camping in most cases is pretty obvious. When it's a grey area, I suggest you ask the player to do something else, and if he continues after repeated tries, do something about it then. People's opinion be da**ed...do the right thing guys...for all aspects (includes swearing *ahem*)

@captnsmooth: I think selfdestruct for the ship after 20 seconds isnt such a good idea. If i hunt a ship and it flees near gate then i cant follow him to get him. I also jump very close to an enemy also if it is near the gate but i think in 20 seconds i cant leave the "death-zone". And i try to fly away from gate if i did kill my enemy.

Official policy:

If a player is gate camping, meaning they are sitting still near a jumpgate and firing on incoming ships. Additionally, this must be a home jumpgate, not a jumpgate linking one system to another. Then moderators should warn the player once, and ask them to move on. If they continue, warn them one last time in UPPER CASE. Finally, if they continue, then /kick or /push... /ban is reserved for more grevious voilations (i.e. Racial slang, harrasment, etc..)

Simple solution:

Spawn at gate, invincible for 60 seconds until:

* Jump 'j' key is used.

* Travel more than 1000gu from gate since spawning.

* Fire weapons on enemy ship.

Invincible ships should have some indicator flash for all players to let them know their status.

This would give players more than enough time to get out of the gate and coordinate themselves.

Camping tactic would be elimitated for all players who do not break any of the rules listed above.

This would also prevent the enemy from nuke/ecm mining the spawn area around the gate.

all ideas listed above r at some point good ... and i prefer the one with lazers and or the invulnerable 60secs..(with status indicator)...or Maybe just an !UNABLE TO JUMP TO THAT LOCATION! for enmy ship ?..bah its another idea..anyway Faustus as the last call on those ..

Gate is one of most important Faction War Building, so there is 100% sure that defence MUST exist .... or u think that when humans build something like this somewhere is Solar system .... there will be NO defence on both ends ? ... rolf....with paranoia (which sometimes save life) i'm sure there will be all weapons including self destruction device with 50+MegaTon Nuke in gate ...

Yet another idea to prevent gate camping
without the need of turning the gate into a fortress, or
disabling weapons near it, invulnerability or introducing severe penalities
for nearby enemy ships. (how would you explain ingame why a ship
should be invulnerable ? *g*)

At the ships selection gate the ships don´t simply pop out in front
of it, but leave the gate at jump speed in a random direction and
come to a stop ~750gu away from it, this way gate camping would´ve
nearly no effect as all the ships simply don´t spawn in front of you.

And at the Metaverse gates one leaves the gate in the same direction
one entered and also at jump speed ~350gu away. So a faction that owns
the system is still able to "control" it, but not being able to do a
total blockade.


This way the annoying gate camping would be no advantage for ppl,
so they simply won´t do it. This way is imo much better than thinking
about possibilities for the 'hard' way, how to punish players for doing
it as it is bad etc...

What if there was more then one gate linking two systems together? It would be that much harder to camp say 3 or 4 gates.

hey, gates are highly expensive hightech installations, you wouldn´t waste ressources by building more than one gate into a system

Idea sounds interesting though.. but it´d make it nearly impossible to defend a captured system and continue attacking, as defending this much gates takes a lot of ships...
