Time for yet another developer update, to let everyone know whats coming down the pipe next for version 1.484...
First off, I'm almost done with switching the code back to a single resource system. Those of you who have argued that this will take away from the strategic importantance of some planets, rest assured that it won't.
We shall be keeping the "Resource" flags as they are called (i.e. Hydrogen, Oxygen, Metals, Heavy Metals)... and upgrades / ships may be limited to only certain planets in the MV and scenerio that have the needed resource flags. For example, a HMA jump drive might require 5000 resources, a technology level of 70, and Hyper Matter to be present on the planet you are currently oribitng before you can perfom that upgrade of your jump drive.
What will be removed are the seperate resource cargo types such as Heavy Metals, Metals, etc... we shall have only one type of resource that you can transport in your cargo hold.
The next major change is to upgrade levels. Upgrade levels for all gadgets are going to be specified by the ship type. In other words, if you have a cruiser, all your devices might automatically be set to level 7. You will not be able to modify or change a device level, it will be controlled in code only. This will obviously require some re-balancing of the levels for some gadgets so we can have a unified level system.
Modding a ship is will change as well. Each gadget will have between 0 and X upgrade paths. When oribiting a friendly planet, you will simply target a device on your ship and press a button to upgrade that device to another. Upgrades will have a time delay depending on the device, cost planet resources, and cost you credits from your account. The mount types will become unimportant information now, so that will be removed from displays... it's actual use was intended for the AI code so it could evual what type of device is what...
Fleet grouping and voice chat are both going to get implemented in this version. Your group is going to be your clan/fleet. No need to invite / disband groups. Any prestige gain / loss will be shared by all other players in your fleet in the current server. Additionally, I'm going to re-enable voice chat... voice chat will default to your fleet only, also going to allow direct voice communications in-game. Obviously, I'm going to provide the ability for a player to mute communications from another just in case someone gets abusive.
Lastly and most important.... death is going to change dramatically. You will no longer lose ships when destroyed, they will be returned to your storage with 1% hull and all devices destroyed. The only penalty a player will pay for death is the time it takes to fully repair (and that is optional as well) your ship.
Feel free to comment...
-Richard

1: First i have to say that Your idea for 484 is great, not having anymore to think about upgrading gadgets due to self upgraded ships by their class is jenious... This will greatly balance the battle betweens ships of same class of different factions.
2: Putting voive chat back is good, But i find that we should have the ability also to voice chat with the faction, example, if a fleet is in distress during a battle and you dont have time to type that distress, it should be good to voice chat to your faction.
3: Making no more ship death because the ships arent destroyed and that it goes back in SY with 1% hull, does that mean that we will not lose anymore prestige? Or will you still keep the press lost by player death and not the ship actully...? But in general, this idea seams very interesting...

I dont get a [beep] about it, but thats ok.
Just wondering, will you lose credits now? or will there still be no compensation requests for credits?

I like this update, people will think twice before they do things carelessly, seeing as they will have to go through so much trouble to restore things back to normal.. indeed this is something i look forward to with great anticipation..

That actually gives more strategic importance to planets than ever.

No more "What resources gives more?!" questons...

Brilliant, actually brings firepower down to what it should be. However, it would be much, much wiser to limit levels by every individual ship, to give each one a more prominent role.

All good..except keep the timers LOW..as in, not more than 2 or 3 minutes, at most.

I have a slight disagreement with this. By default your group should be your fleet, however, it would be nice to have an option to merge groups, for example, two fleets on the same faction ([Raven] and [-[A]-] for a quick example) who are working together in the same system could group together for easier orgranization.
Other than that, voice chat is obviously a + here.

...well..I can see both a good thing here and a bad thing.
The good thing is, we no longer have to worry about losing a ship that we've spent a period of time to modify just right.
The bad thing is, is that if there were no prestige loss (since you say the only penalty is the time it fully takes to repair), is that people can just run into planets, then respawn and have someone whore supply prestige off of it.
Hence, it can be abused.
Other than that, I think the general idea of this enitre next version looks very promising. I've waited 3 fragger years to see a balence in which everyone is happy with, perhaps it will work this time.

What can I say? Score.
I had once praised Darkspace as the best implementation of space combat/strategy I had seen in any game.
The game went off course with 483, but it seems that Faustus is quick to correct any misjudgements that were made, and actually listens to the player base.
Very commendable indeed.
484 promises to be very enjoyable indeed, and, with a little ship and faction balancing, I believe Darkspace would once again be as enjoyable as it used to be.
--
I have made my fair share of criticisms of 483. Though I have not tested 484, I believe it is a giant step in the right direction.
Congratulations, Faustus. Well done.

Ent, your right and it is my intention to keep some prestige penatly for getting destroyed. I just forgot to include that information in my message. My intent is to remove the stupid "Compensation" requests from this game forever and all time, and make death, like in WOW, more of an incoveniance rather than a major setback.
Concerning the upgrade times ... the upgrade timer will be between 1 - 30 seconds at most... (usually about 10 seconds to upgrade). So basically, once you start upgrading a component you can't use it for those seconds.
I just want to try to get some type of grouping system up as quickly as possible... doing it fleet based is practically free. A dynamic grouping system will require a ton more work as that information must be shared between multiple servers in the backend. It's a complicated issue, but this is really a case where some technology limitations are driving the design.

Could always do it based on zone, or have it update at a longer intervals....but, that can always be done later.

A good thing too, I hate being set back too far for a death.

Better than I could have hoped for.

Well...you could always use the 1.480 code of 'Free grouping' - except with some changes like. only Command Stations and/or Dreadnoughts can create a group, automatically anyone in that fleet is joined to that group, and grouping is invite only, also, groups should not be limited but could be locked to anyone outside your fleet.
Simply...I'd like to see a grouping system where it's not totally restricted, but limited enough that it gives more tactical value that allows anyone and everyone on that faction, to join in.
**Edit - Jack came up with the brilliant suggestion too, have said update intervals to be long, and data only constantly streaming to that current zone.

Put an option to disable voice-chat ingame for the modem users who don't want their bandwidth satured with useless garbage and I approve.

okay, so will ships just magically dissapear now, or will they still explode/drop resources and then basically just respawn at the jumpgate with 1% hull? and im hoping we wont see a bunch of repair hoes, even though im sure we will... i guess it gives newbies a better way to gain those first few ranks

Huh? You mean... I orbit a planet, select my AR missile, and can change it to an IT missile? I think that's what you're talking about anyways...
Just don't make missile, torps, lasers, and cannons interchangeable! That has created some of the worst balance issues ever in this version... picket and escort dessies, which are supposedly PD boats, are being used as uberpowerful gunships. Missile ships are being used as torpedo boats, and pack more firepower than assault ships. The ICC missile dread in particular, can mount all torpedoes instead of missiles and kill a station in about 30 seconds.
Other than that, it looks pretty good, aside from the fact that I'm not going to particularly enjoy flying to 5 different planets to upgrade my components...
...Oh yes, the ever-important question: When's the patch coming out?!?!!1?!!one!!eleven!!111!
