This is something I have been playing about with making for a while. Throughts, feedback, or even models would be useful. A basic playable scenario could be created within a single weekend provided the assets are available.

Project Codename - DarkSpace AirShip Mod
Actual Name – To Be Decided

Design Concept

An MMO featuring tactical ship-to-ship combat in airships. Capture, control and build up islands in a two faction conflict.

This would be built using the Medusa Game Engine and based on the DarkSpace game play. A proof of concept can be built as a customized DarkSpace scenario.
The game would have a slower combat pace than DarkSpace. By using fewer weapons and projectiles with slower comparative velocities we will enable use of the graphics engine to effectively render particle trails and also reduce load on the server in terms of hit detection.
Most airships would make heavy use of broadside armament. There may be a few smaller airships or 'flyers' that feature forward only weaponry.
Airships would not be in scale with the environment. Airships will also not collide with terrain, instead they will bump over terrain. Features such as aerial nets could be used in an attempt to restrict avenues of movement.


Story

The planet is a lost colony from DarkSpace. Due to a drive malfunction they ended up up stranded way outside of the Human Quadrant. I might throw a wormhole into it that sent them back through time. It's a stretch but anything to make it workable.

The ship was damaged, its terraforming equipment barely functional. The only planet they could get to was a mountainous "Venus" type. Anything below the cloud level is highly corrosive and deadly; there is a only a narrow layer above this in which airships can operate.

The colonists have been stranded for about 120 years, and have had to work hard to survive. There are now two factions:

The Free Cities - Freedom of the individual, believe in minimal government. Loosely co-operative and probably the most inventive due to the encouragement of free thought and the circumstances under which they have to survive. Airships tend to be more thrown together as no real centralized construction, but still well built.

The Organization - A derivative of the UGTO. Governed by a senate but very authoritarian. Personal freedoms are restricted in the name of survival. Centralized construction gives a similar design and style to most of their vessels.

Regardless, they have only got back to primitive AG tech within the last 25 years, and conflict has only broken out within the last few. Before this there had been no developed weapons technology or conflict for the colony.


Immediate requirements:

Ship model – 3ds MAX – Similar style to http://wrathofzombie.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/airship.jpg – maybe a little bit earlier, 1000 polygons max

Weapon model – 3ds MAX – Pre-ww1 style, 100 polygons

Sky box texture – png format, 256*256 gradient from light to dark blue

Ground/Water textures – png format, 256*256 > 512*512 tiles

Island/Mountain model – 3ds max, 2000 polygons max

Island/Mountain textures – png format, 256*256 > 512*512 tiles

Tower Top model - 3ds max, 2000 polygons max

Tower Top textures - png fomat, 256*256 > 512*512 tiles


Long term requirements:

Multiple airship models
Multiple weapon models
Multiple island/mountain models
Multiple tower models
Realistic water effects with reflection
Realistic cloud effects
Realistic weather effects

Slower paced combat with improved graphics sounds nice and not having to worry about collisions would make it a bit more forgiving.

Did you have any kind of special weaponry in mind? Is it just cannons and such, or will there be options for more specialized things like floating mines or short ranged weapons like grappling hooks or machine guns?

What do you mean airship? (pictures are just pics I found on google for "airship", and am using them to just visualize concepts)

It is a personal project (as a DarkSpace mod), although if enough people were interested then it could well become an independent game hosted via GameCQ.

While classical blimp style might be appealing to some, I prefer a more..

I dunno, incredibly hardcore look? Seriously look at that picture man, tell me you would not feel like a god in that. That would be like the best trip ever. With guns.
