Every once in a while, my GPU decides to scramble textures, and what I end up with is Darkspace on acid:
I especially like the zebra corvette  .

no thats the 1.650 beta patch you see scouts are replaced with zebras and dreads will be replaced with unicorns

From Launch tab -> Launch Darkspace Setup -> Video -> Medium Configure.
It would solve your problem (by disable most of features)

It's an Nvidia 8800GTS.
Also, this only rarely happens. Normally it runs perfectly on all high. When it does happen, the screen freezes for a moment and then comes back with textures randomized.
Even between reformats, this happens. I dunno, any computer I've ever had has always done wierd stuff. I just assume it's a quirk of having a crappy OS like windows  .

it's probobly a corrupt file somewhere but one question through. when did this start happening and is it happening more often?

Strange.. My old graphic card was that too and it never happened to me Hmmm.....

Since I reformatted 4 months ago, it has happened considerably less. In fact, I hadn't seen it in almost as much time.
But before that, it'd happen somewhat often, but still randomly. As in, sometimes it wouldn't happen, and sometimes it would happen after only an hour or so.
Also, this is the only game this happens on. I'm not asking "Hey, fix this!", in fact it doesn't bug me. I'm just saying "This looks hilarious, don't you agree?"  .
