if we had x axis i think it would be awsome, pitching up and down instead of going above the better ship seem kinda dull really.

Fact : The 1.5 series of DS revisions have clients with a flag code similar to SHIP_Z_AXIS_ENABLE=0 (equivalent to "No ship goes up or down by the client's commands").
It may have been done to make ship arcs more sensible. With z-flight and rotation, you can make 1-degree movements to switch arcs if your bottom is facing a target (thereby enabling an all-weapon alpha strike).
Or maybe calculation trajectories in 3 dimensions gets hard for the server (ask people of the DS 1.2 times about how fighterspamming UGTO broke the server. Most reply that its sheer number of collision detections, but i blame it on 3-D projectile motion of fighters and their cannons.
Or maybe universe is a huge empty place, and no-one wants to fly in an empty area. Yup, very lonely.
I don't think 3-D flight gets enabled anytime soon. Maybe after Two Weeks™...

dive down and appear from jump under you and proceed to point up and give you some much needed loving with beam weapons .

Good to hear that, a vertical axis would just complicate the game and do nothing positive to the game at all imo.
For this suggestion i suggest "Accension {COM}" should be enslaved by MI in Kaus Borealis, for at least 1 happy new year.

It has been said before that vertical movement will never be implemented in DS, maybe DS2, if it has space combat.

I'm sure that everyone can imagine how extensive of a change this would be. I rather have the devs focus their precious time on other issues first. It's not dull to play on (fairly) flat plane, it's Darkspace.

If we're gonna implement a Z-axis, then the whole game will change. It might as well become a starship simulator, a-la Battlecruiser 3000.
I don't think that's a bad idea per se, but DS is DS right now. It's a 3rd-person view tactical shooter.
Maybe DS2, eh?
Build it upon the Freespace engine or something. LOL.

It could hypothetically work if you used a Homeworld-style interface without changing the essential character (tactical vs. shooter) of the game...
I'm not sure why you would, though. And from a programming perspective, you really would need a new engine from the ground-up to make it work.
