An artist's impression of the high power, solid-state laser mounted on a Phalanx Close-in Weapon System, that was used by U.S. Navy to shoot down four drones.

Power requirements are way too high to mount on any current military vehicle, except maybe the new F35 JSF. The engine output requirements for VTOL (it has a huge fan in the centre powered by the main turbofan engine) are maybe enough to power a laser weapon system on the conventional takeoff version (which has no need for a central fan).
They have tested trailer based versions that use chemical lasers. This is the first system to use a solid state.

Thats why im proud to be an American. Even though we are virtually the only country with a capable drone fleet, we still design weapons to destroy them just cause. This isnt news though, these tests have been done succesfully several times over the past few years, this is just the first time it has gotten the public's eye for some reason. Btw the special 747 with the laser mounted on the nose has had some succesful tests also. I wouldn't expect lasers to replace traditional weapons just yet though, they will mainly be used for defencive purposes at first, as missiles and scuds and such are significantly more vulnerable to heat than actual aircraft are.
