The future (5-10 years) is here for new ways to play online computer games?

So far nine big game publishers have signed up to the service
With the data being sent from servers just fifty miles away, the men boasted of being able to play with one-millisecond of lag.
Community tools like leaderboards and avatars along with the ability to share 'brag clips' which are short videos of your game highlights, are also part of the service. Users can also have multiplayer matches and watch other gamers play.
Users will need a high-speed broadband connection of at least 1.5 megabits per second for standard definition results or 5 megabits per second for high definition. |

Already being deployed in the commercial graphics sector. not ready for games, but can be simply accepted.
One thing however would be cost, OK even if you get the majority of the people ready for it. it still would be cheaper to own a console on sight.
In my eyes the only reason people would get attracted to such a system if any and all subscriptions to the games are included.

Yeah. Not really a fan of this. I enjoy PC gaming because you can modify things and have endless access to user-created content in most games. I mean, it could be neat for sampling a game or a specific set of hardware for a desktop upgrade, but otherwise... blech.

Wouldn't be too hard me thinks. Mod makers could actually host their game ON the servers, and pay a little bit for it.
Think about it...
You make a mod for Generic Shooter 2009. Instead of having to upload it constantly and stuff - you just host the game on their servers for a small fee. That way everyone can get it - hell, you'll probably get better coverage.
Doesn't have to be all bad

Ofcourse there are advantages for it jack.
No maintinance care (virus free etc.), always avalable, lower consumer power consumption.
But considering the tradition of people trying to soft/hard crack there console and adding trainers or cheats to a game. Most of those traditional people will not like a system like this.
But yes i see that a system like this will provide a family means of preformance entertainment other than that Stupid TV.
I just wonder what the costs are, and implications on various levels of currently avalable technoplogy, and on current values and traditions.
One for instance; in europe most of the internet infastructure has already been stretched to the limit, and most of it will in the future be replaced by cable or glasfibre.. but at the moment cutting a extra 1.5mbit of that might not seem interesting to most consumers. (Atleast not around here).
