Warcraft: The Movie? Sam Raimi thinks so! |

With Mark Wahlberg's noir video game flick Max Payne debuting atop the box-office chart, Hollywood is once again clamoring to find other game properties to slap on celluloid. It's a risky gamble -- for every Tomb Raider blockbuster lies a thousand House of the Dead flops.
So if you're going to turn a video game into a film, it helps if you're already good at this sort of thing. And it doesn't hurt if you pick as popular a game as possible.
It's no wonder, then, that gamers and cinephiles alike are excited at the news of Spider-Man director Sam Raimi praising the big-screen possibilities of beloved multiplayer game, World of Warcraft. In a spirited MTV article exploring the problems behind video game movies, Raimi weighed in by explaining why games tend to be tougher to turn into compelling flicks than comics.
"In the world of video games, it's usually more of an environment or a scenario, not character-based ... but they certainly could [be better]. There's 'World of Warcraft' -- what an awesome video game! It has such great, adventurous characters in it and such fantastic landscapes and rules. ... You could make a brilliant 'World of Warcraft' movie -- as fine as any of the best superhero movies -- if you had the right writers and directors."
Such as...Sam Raimi? While he has yet to announce any formal plans to make a WoW film, we couldn't think of a better man for the job who ISN'T Peter Jackson. But with news of two more Spider-Man films on the way, the chances are looking slim.
For Now...

They already declared it will be of events set before WoW was released.
It's not a WoW movie.
It's a Warcraft movie. Warcraft has the largest lore of any game ever created, and has many (MANY) heroes not just of a specific time-line, but in different places. It'd be dead easy to make one about a hero, such as Uther (google it).

I've alyways loved Blizzard's cutscenes and such, and I think a movie would be pure awesome.

I'd wager that Asheron's Call has more, and more importantly theirs is far more unique in their creation of races lore and storylines. No elves or dwarves in AC, but you will find Lugians, Gromnies, and the ever lovable Drudge

Warcraft was released in 1994 - I urge to say they've had a lot more time to hone and shine their lore and backstory (AC was released in 1999 for comparison). Due to WoW they've actually had to butcher some of the backstory of the previous games (WC3 was a huge setting for their universe (Azeroth)).

id rather have a mass effect movie or stuff.
Fits well into a 1,5 hour movie while warcraft will just end up with: "wait why the f is...?" moments.
Expansive lore like warcraft (or warhammer [40k preferably]) is more like materia lfor a series.
in a series you have all the time in the world to flesh out things.

AC's lore is more comprehensive though, stretching back through eons as for back as the Yalani and Dericost.

I think you need to qualify that and/or narrow the conditions to qualify as #1 otherwise I'd suggest walking into a gaming store and ask the clerk/owner there about some of the really old games they've played.
Just to pick one, a subset of DnD, Forgotten Realms probably has several times the literature that WoW has created. Literature, source material, etc etc.
Anybody else play the Pool of Radiance Series back in the 80's?

They have their own library at Blizzard HQ with books on their own lore. I've yet to hear of any other game that has it's own library for such use (also says something about the size of it).
I know some card company is furthering the IP, and it's gone on pretty far. I could be wrong, but I sat down and nerded out completely looking at IP's and such one day (think it was Drafell who linked me to soemthing and then I got lost in the internet for a few hours). Came across a list of game IP and lore, linking to resources (wish I could remember where it was, was pretty interesting).
WoW, a game I'd never heard of and cannot remember for the life of me, and City of Heroes were said to have the largest lore of any MMO's though.
Does anyone have any idea if there's an MMO (keep it limited to that, otherwise we'll start stretching into DnD and we'll be here for decades) other than the obvious ones with huge backstory/lore?
