1) When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of "Empire Building" by George Bush.

He answered by saying, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return."

It became very quiet in the room.

2) Then there was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break one of the French engineers came back into the room saying "Have you heard the latest dumb stunt your President has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intended to do, bomb them?"

A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 5,000 people three meals a day; they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck.. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?'

Once again, dead silence.

A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, "whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English." He then asked, "Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?'

Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied "Maybe it's because the
Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German."

You could have heard a pin drop...

AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE...

A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to France on a tour. Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane.

At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. "You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked sarcastically.

Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.

"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready."

The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."

"Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in
France !"

The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained. "Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in '44 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find any damn Frenchmen to show it to."

Gotta say I've been anti bush, anti war, pro isolationist as anyone but those figures are impressive and what Colin Powel said is true, at least outside of our own continent. Well done

The U.S. has aircraft carrier groups that can support cities, since the people involved are 40K+. There's nothing unusual about that. The fact the U.S. parks them off the coast of countries that don't have a developed military to threaten them with sea/air power, however, is what concerns anyone with a conscious. How can humans allow a country to threaten anyone with natural resources to give them up under the threat of massive military action spearheaded by aircraft carrier groups?

Of course they have hospitals, barber shops, stores, etc. Each carrier group is a medium-sized city.

Non-interventionist policy--as the Libertarians would advise--is a competent policy that would compensate for the deficiencies in an isolationist policy.

Isolationist foreign policy, however, is dangerous and absurd.

I hardly think it was a flame thread. If he had said all your countries suck compared to america that would be but all hes doing is making observations which counter the many accusations thrown America's way these days. Patriotic is the word, which with America's world reputation, must be reduced to mean 'not anti american.' It will be a long time before even we can attempt to outrightly brag about our country again.

The carriers were developed for war, during a time when such attacks as you deem nessicery to defeat them were difficult for even the superpowers they faced to manage. While today's technology could no doubt defeat them, it is as you said that there are no real superpowers. Even if the deck is disabled by a missle, that only stops planes not helicoptors which would be used to help areas. Also for all that you can turn this into a flame, using war machines to help people is noble. That they werent built for such a purpose is unfortunate but unavoidable.

You may well be right that non intervention is the better way, I havent had much exposure to that philosphy. Isolationism theoretically combines Non-interventionism and Protectionism, and has only been followed by two countries in the last century out of the five notable ones who have ever tried it, the U.S. not being one. That said, either back your criticism with fact and example or dont be rude. Also I dont know how other countries feel directly, but most of the media thrown our way implies that they would prefer we lock ourselves away.

A sad note, the next and last Nimitz class carrier will be completed this year, with the designation 'CVN77 George H. W. Bush'. Lets hope it will benifit the country and the world more than its namesake, or be burned in effigy at port.

I, too, went to read this thread with the assumption that I'd be seeing some history here... and possibly debating what was said. I'm the guy you know who is trying to become the douchebag history professor who doesn't win popularity contests.

Still, I wasn't disappointed by the first post. It was rather satisfying to read.

The second to last story made me lol hard, but I told it to my friends and they looked at me like I was retarded. Sad when you have to explain that France was taken over by Germany(without a fight or willingly I cant remember) and that that is the punch line. Oh ya and this made me choke on my drink when I was trying to find the answer and this showed up. Nothing inappropriate I think... http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/HowTo:Take_Over_France

While I get sense of pride out of reading the forum topic, I dont think the topic itself was a good idea being that not all of us are Americans and could possibly take offense to it.

That's Jek Porkins, and he's flying an X-wing, callsign Red Six.

I'm going to go cry for knowing that now.
