Its a fungus. His immune system has a rare cytokine and interfon disorder that allowed this fungus to 'hijack' his immune response. Whereever an inflamatory response was signaled an uncontrolled growth arose.
Last i heard he declined treatment because he works for a circus with other people who are not as fortunate as you and me.
Whats interesting is he has 2 completely normal offspring but his mom shows genetic signs of the defect but does not have any expression or any other organism who has worked the same way as her son jakreet or whatever his name is.

I remember this from My Amazing Story. He hasn't killed himself because he has a family to "provide" for he does this by being in that circus. Sad very sad last I heard some doctors were hoping to completly remove the tree limbs and give him a semi-normal existence
