I've got some spare time on my hands till the 30th and I'm looking for some ideas.
I've got this old laptop(500mhz amd, 128mb ram, etc) and I'm looking for good ideas for a use for it. I've already looked at making a picture frame, giant mp3 player, router, etc. Haven't found anything that really sparks my interest.
Anyone got anything really neat ideas?

Turn it into a Crysis server, tell people its fast download, make the admin email public, and then count how many people try to send you malware.

Sell it.
Strip search it.
Or make it usefull as a:
(From easy to Hard)
Install darkspace on it so you can play everywhere,
Brouwser pc,
Download server,
Seed server,
Music server,
Alarm clock,
Webcam server,
Print server,
Data server,
Apache server,
Streaming server,
Dial-in server (need modem),
Router (need second nic),
Telnet server,
MUD server,
Boot server,
Terminal server,
Burning server (need some Lego + Mindstorm brick),
Electronic Remote Switch server (need extra external hardware + LPT port),
House alarm (need extra external hardware + com + LPT port).
However there are some extra stuff you might want to try.
(More for the more advanced guru's)
Overclock the CPU untill it melts
Install linux and ubber test plus make a tutorial how to runn DS on linux.
Add a "add-on touch panel" to the display,
Add a webcam, make a pedistal and place it at your front door. (interactive door bell),
Stripp it and put the parts in a shoubox or build your own notebook,
Stripp it and put the parts it in a old 19" CRT, (Homebuild apple),
Put it in your already existing collection of "Cluster Laptops" in a rebuild fridge,
And thats all i can think off at the moment, but i know i am missing some.
P.s. left out some since it is a notebook and you don't have spare ISA/PCI slots.

Pawn shop it and go buy lunch with a beer.

besides a server, a sledge hammer works wonders.
no, i'm serious, we had this really old computer for no reason and we lit it on fire. after we smashed the inside with a sledge hammer. it had, uh, sensitive documents on it. and stuff.

I'm pretty sure Osp means to say "pawn shop".

Well I've already removed the guts from the casing due to the hinges being broken.
Since it's quite old it wouldn't work for gameserver. Much to slow for that.
I'm thinking of building a new casing. Possibly a wooden one. The actual hardware is in good shape. Windows is out of the question, the apps to do anything are too bloated for it unless I went backwards to 95 or 98. I've seen the windows lite versions which I think is an awesome project btw. But still windows would cripple it doing anything useful.
I've been looking at totally different OSs entirely. I just got done booting out of AROS. There's also Plan 9.
Of course these are more experimental than useful. Then again, I'm not really going for anything useful, more for a nifty effect.
Edit:Typo

Actually, I've got a good project in mind...AI.
There seem to be enough projects around with GPL(or close) code for most of the basic AI functions.
If you could create or use a microkernel with just enough additions to run the code a basic chatterbot could be made directing the output to the console.
It would be pretty interesting to see. I've been looking around for similar projects and haven't really found a good starting point and it's just an idea rambling around in my head.
One problem, I don't think it can be done in three weeks lol.
