Three men go into a motel. The clerk says the room is $30, so each man pays $10 and enters the room. A little while later, the clerk realizes that the room was only $25 so he sent the bellboy to the room with $5. On the way, the bellboy couldn't figure out how to split $5 evenly between 3 men, so he gave each man $1 and kept $2 for himself.

This means that the three men paid $9 each, which is a total of $27. Add that $27 to the $2 the bellboy kept, and you get $29. What happened to the other dollar?

You arent anywhere near answering the question

Each of the 3 men pay $10

10
10
10

Then, they each get $1 back, which makes it to

9
9
9

9*3=27

Add the $2 the bellboy kept, and you get $29

I am not asking how to solve it the other way(which any idiot can do). I am asking how I got $29

This thing is soo old...

30 paid - 5 to return = 25 in the register

25 + (3x1) for the men = 28

28 + 2 for the little bastard who skims a little from the top = 30

Case solved, need any more help with basic maths?
You got 29 because you count it the wrong way. the $2 has to be subtracted from the $27, not added

lol, i figured as much, but this long with no sleep... at least you explained it to me

I figured it out when i got it, but that was like 2.5 hours ago then I had a brainfart and lost it all.. I knew how there was $25 in the till, and how there was $5 given from it, but i couldn understand how they got that stupid $29.. and with lack of sleep, brain fart and my normal Blonde-ness I couldnt hit the broad side of the barn with a stationary cannon pointed directly at it.
