In my times on the USS Harry S. Truman I helped man .50 cal self defense gun mounts during its pasage through the Suez Canal and the Straights of Hormuz along with its operations in the Noth Persian Gulf. Manning the Gun mounts was called "Fullbore" This event became quite tedious when, one day we had a rather nervious OOD (Officer Of the Deck). Well needless to say we were called to alert more than one time and this poem is in tribute to this, and written by a good friend of mine who was my loader/radioman. I hope you understand the humor. Half bore is just that.. half the guns are manned.
One Bore, Two Bore
By: MM2(SW/AW) Walter Blackburn
Contacts off the starboard bow
The OOD just had a cow
Pass the word, "Set Half Bore”
We did it this morning, we’ll do it once more.
We’ve got the M240’s
Up there on the deck
Should we man some more watches
Ok sure what the heck.
Now pass the word
Set Full Bore
None of the watches
Know just what the hell for.
We sit and we wait
All guns Condition One
Cause the enemy is out there
Though none of us see.
A fact guaranteed, proven
Tested and true
Them Talibans are out there
And gunning for you.
Finally a contact!
Hey man call it in.
The OOD freaked out
About a cruise ship again.
We secure all our weapons
After hours on end
Wondering when’s the next time
We’ll be called again.
Moments later we hear it
The word being said
Set Full Bore again
Contacts dead ahead.
So we man up our weapons
Some here and some there
But not one round was fired
Not even a flare.
The radar just showed
Contacts 40 miles out
So up here we’ll stay
All day and night no doubt.

I thought you guys would like it... It did make its way around the ship then got promptly squashed when the aforementioned Officer got a coppy emailed to him. The C.O. got a chuckle out of it too...
