Unless you are using a game-time coupon, subscribed, or there is a free trial, then you will not be able to use any statistics or badges you gain. You can still play with the basic ship selection, and quite effectively too. Your prestige is not 'lost' and as soon as you redeem a coupon or subscribe, it weill recalculate along with any additional changes that occured during your unsubscribed time.
You are not prevented from gaining or increasing your stats and getting them displayed in the Rankings. You just cannot use them.
This is the incentive to subscribe although by no means is it required.
You can win coupons by entering one of the events or competitions.
Currently we are running a Screenshot Competition, which is a monthly event.
The prizes for this competition have been increased significantly so there is a good chance that many people who enter will win something, providing of course, the pictures are up to standard

Have you redeemed any of the coupons you should have received in email? There should be a 14 days trial coupon and possibly a 7 day one because of the recent MV downtime.

There should have been a 14 day coupon that was sent when your email address was verified.
You might need to go into your profile and check that your verification email has been sent. There should be an option displayed in the Edit Profile section if it hasn't been done.

So you want something for nothing huh? Well since this just shows the declining state of our youth I must say this...
You got this game for free... How many decent MMO's do you know that are "free"? You either pay for the software and get free time (Diablo II comes to mind) or you get free software and pay-to-play (like Darkspace).
You know its sad to see someone get upset and say a game is bad becuase they cannot get something for free... What do todays youth think they should get?? Handouts for life??
Well all I can say is come back when you get some cash... It's not like the Boss Man Faustus makes millions of dollars off the subscriptions (unlike Microsoft and others) on games like Evercrack and SWG....
I am sorry for this rant but it chaffs my hide to see people whine about not getting to play for free...

i always like free games that you pay monthly for since they usually come with a trial and if you don't like the game no money lost..
