There are many different 3D modeling programs, many of which carry a hefty price tag with them. Unfortunately DarkSpace models have to be created and textured in one of those programs, currently 3D Studio Max 4 or 5.
If all you are interested in is creating models for fun, or learning about 3D modeling, there are some great pieces of software available out there.
My personal recommendation would be Blender 3D, which is an open source application and capable of giving professional level results.
Blender 3D is not the easiest program to learn to use, as it has very few commands in common with normal windows based applications, but when you do get over the initial learning curve you will find it is a very quick, responsive, and powerful modeling tool.

Hooraay Blender!
I think I can say Blender is the most popular freeware Open-Source modeling program, based simply on the fact that I havn't found anything else similar/free that had so much support.
IMHO, of course...
In the unlikely case that the Wikibook doesn't cover what you need there's a fortune of tutorials to be found just looking it up on Google; odds are you're problem will be solved within the first 2 pages.

Actually, there is a free tool that is capable of doing the same models in 3DS extension. That is GMAX, it is as cool as 3DS Max, just add the needed plugins to it. And for games it is the best, because - FREE:

wasn't GMAX free version of MAX for public due to Autodesk deals with game developers/publishers ?
also Autodesk ceased GMAX long time ago ...

Or you can give the Sketch Up program a try it is very easy to use and has alot of different applications with it that allow you to do almost anything with it and the best part about the program is that it is free.

Holy ancient thread resurrection batman...
Well since its back near the top, Models for Darkspace are now modeled in 3dsMax R9 and 3dsMax 2010.
The models are then exported to an FBX format for import into the game.
So any program that supports .FBX format can be used to create new models.
