Just a refresher course on taking screenshots and uploading them should you find a need to.

Capture and Viewing

  • OPTION A: To take a screenshot ingame, just hold the 'Alt' key and press 'T'.
This creates a .jpg file in your Darkspace directory (by default C:Program FilesPalestarDarkspace.CacheDarkspace) with the name 000000##.jpg where ## is the number of the screenshot.

  • OPTION B: Using Fraps,
    1) Select a key for screenshots (I use F9, as an example, F11 and F12 are also common)
    2) Select a folder where screenshots will be saved to (the fraps folder by default)
Caveat: The free version of Fraps will only allow screenshots to be saved as .bmp files. You will still need to convert the image format before uploading.

  • To view your screenshots you'll need an image program that supports .jpg files, which means pretty much anything will do. We recommend IrfanView or XnView, they're both totally free, and have a number of nifty features like batch processing (handy if you have a lot of screenshots).

  • To convert your screenshots to another format suitable for uploading (using Irfanview as an example), select the File menu, and click Save As. In the Save as Type dropdown box select GIF, JPG or PNG. A second box will appear with compression settings for that file type. Irfanview's default settings are fine.

Uploading and Hosting

  • To host your screenshots online, you'll need an image host. Your ISP may allow you web space on their servers, you may be able to it on your own website or server, or you can use any of a number of free hosts. http://www.imageshack.us/ gives you clickable thumbnail images that link to the full size image so as not to mess up delicate forum formatting, and is commonly recommended. http://www.tinypic.com, http://www.dropbox.com, http://prntscr.com/, http://www.imgur.com are all good options.

  • Imageshack
    1) Select your image and press the UPLOAD NOW button
    2) After the image is uploaded, under Links to share your image:
Forum Thumbnail - for posting images in the forums.
Direct Link - for signatures or sending the image to a staff member or /reporting

  • tinypic
    1) Select your image and press the UPLOAD NOW button
    2) After the image is uploaded, under Share This Image:
IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards - for posting images in the forums.
Direct Link for Layouts - for signatures or sending the image to a staff member or /reporting

bump for the tl;dr types

  1. Take screenshot. [Alt]+[T] in-game or use Fraps (it's free).
  2. Find screehshot. C:Program FilesPalestarDarkspace.CacheDarkspace00000##.tga or your fraps folder, depending what you used.
  3. Convert screenshot.
    1) use Iranview v3.99 (it's free too)
    2) open screenshot in irfanview
    3) press [S] key to open 'Save Picture As' dialog. save image as JPG or PNG (default settings are fine) and put it somewhere easy to find (your desktop).
  4. Upload screenshot. tinypic.com, browse for file, click upload button.
  5. Link screenshot. copy URL from Direct Link for Layouts, paste in forums or chat.

Just to give a alternative to Irfanview, Xnview is a freeware program that knows a load of image formats and has a lot of extra options.

there is even a Xnview powered online converter site called fixpicture.com. Handy for people on the move or who don't want or can install to install programs..

keep shooting those pics,
E.
