Hey, I haven't been back for very long but I've always had a spot in my heart for Darkspace and all of our History and Fanfiction, so I thought I'd give it a try myself. Enjoy.

Chapter I - Introduction

He awoke to the sound and vibration of the bus coming to a stop. Having recently graduated the military academy at the top of his class in New Arlington, Commander Jen Kastilo was sent to work on the helm aboard a brand new destroyer. In years past such a new officer would have only dreamt of such an opportunity - however, the war with the ICC was causing a lot of death on both sides, and as experience was killed off, knowledge stepped forward in its place.

The passengers unloaded their luggage from the bus and walked across the pavement where a military truck was awaiting them. The men climbed into the back of the truck silently, knowing instinctually what to do. They had all been through extensive military training, and the canvas-topped military trucks used on Earth were nothing new to them.

The truck drove them across the base, where a few soldiers were waiting for them, most wearing the beige UGTO military pants with the uniform shirts either wrapped around their waste or simply worn unbuttoned. Most had oil-stained or sweaty white t-shirts underneath. One of the soldiers walked up to greet the group, and when he got close Jen noticed the insignia on his cap marking him as an officer.

"Men, we don't have much time, but remember that this is something that must be taken seriously. Don't get cocky. If we tell you to drop on the floor and sing a song, we need you to **** drop on the **** floor and sing a **** song, because we wouldn't tell you to if it didn't mean somebody would die. Understood?"

The men just nodded, at a loss for words... how dangerous could this be? Didn't they do this all the time?

They were about to be launched to the destroyer awaiting them in orbit. Jen noticed the massive grey-and-blue craft taxiing to a large runway - it looked strange, like a massive steel pod with wings folded at a slight angle so they rested against the hull, with huge engines at the rear. It was built to move fast and take a beating - but the power of the planet's atmosphere is not something that can be undermined by steel and rocket fuel, and so even a sturdy ship like this could end up being destroyed in seconds.

"Are you gentlemen ready to kill some Confederates?"

Some of the men cheered. The officer, however, did not change his emotion.

"You men will see quickly, that death is something that can happen to anyone. If you're not making sure that you're safe, you will die, because I guarantee you that the man on the other side is making sure that you're not safe. Now get the hell out of here, rookies."

Now silent, the men took their suitcases and walked to the craft, which was now parked fairly close at the end of a runway. A ramp had come down from the craft, and soon they were all inside and belted to their seats. If the transport ships were built to get the job down they sure as hell weren't built to be comfortable.

A projected image near the front of the bay showed a view of the cockpit camera, watching in front of them. They saw the runway, miles long in front of them with green dotting the horizon. They then heard a deep mechanical rumble, presumably as the wings were locked into position.

Then they heard a slight purr of engines, which quickly powered up into an almost deafening roar. They all watched the screen.

There was no movement.

The engines got louder and louder, and eventually quieted into a slow humming.

One of the other men, Commander Jeff Abraham, laughed. "What is this thing, broken?"

His smile was erased, as the humming engines suddenly accelerated at a speed the men were not accustomed to. Despite all their training, the UGTO could not afford to send them into orbit until it was time to board their ship.

Most of them had never left the planet before.

They saw on the screen the blue sky, getting deeper in color. Soon it became extraordinarily bright, and the ship was shaking extremely violently.

Commander Abraham vomitted in a thick plastic bag, kept near the seats exactly for that purpose.

Suddenly, everything was silent. No more engine roaring, no more shaking, and the screen was showing nothing but static.

They watched for what felt like hours in silent anticipation.

The screen suddenly came online, and they saw in front of them the massive station guarding the planet Earth. Docked against its hull were several destroyers. One of them must be their destroyer!

Chapter II

The men were sitting together at a café aboard the station, awaiting their next orders when a man in a heavily decorated, black-and-gray UGTO uniform approaches them. As soon as they realize his rank, they all stand to salute him.

"At ease, gentlemen. I can see that you all have had a safe trip. I am thankful for this."

"I am Captain Thomas Hudson, but I would prefer you just call me "Captain". I am correct that you are the crew assigned to operate the bridge aboard my ship?"

"Aye, sir", most of them said in unison.

"Good", he said, pulling out a list, "Let me verify... Cmdr. Jeff Abraham, Electronic Warfare Engineer?"

"Aye, sir."

"Cmdr. Robert Tak, Ship Propulsion Engineer?"

"That's correct, sir."

"Cmdr. James Rinkaby, Weapons Expert?"

"Yes, sir."

"Cmdr. Jen Kastilo, Squadron Leader?"

"Aye, sir."

"Cmdr. Paul Turk, Intelligence?"

"Yes sir."

Commander Turk was a silent man. Jen wasn't sure if he had even heard him speak before this moment.

"Good", said Cpt. Hudson, "Let's get to the ship so I can brief you all on how she works. She's a very unique ship to the UGTO... this design has never been used before.

They all wondered what this meant, but they did not have time to talk. They all hurried after the Captain, and boarded a small pod that led them to the destroyer.

"Gentlemen, I welcome you to the most advanced destroyer the UGTO has ever built, the UWS Espero. The Confederation would kill to get designs for a ship like this - and indeed, they've tried. We're hoping to turn the tide of the war with this ship."

They walked along the passages inside the ship. Everything was built very high-tech, even for a spaceship - the doors were all polished steel frames with the traditional sliding opaque doors used by the UGTO, and there were lights lining the bottom edge of the walls to keep the floor lit. It was a beautiful ship.

They got to the bridge, and saw that there were already some lower-ranking officers at work at the controls. They all recognized the bridge, as they had been trained to use it. They all got adjusted to their seats and looked at the controls.

Captain Hudson climbed into his chair, which was elevated above the rest and had controls before him, which he would use to send orders all over the ship almost instantly.

"Unfortunately we do not have much time. We've been ordered to get out of Sol as soon as possible - our mission is one of extreme importance."

Although tired, the men took their orders.

"Undocking from Station A00131", read a young woman from behind one of the many consoles.

"Activate proton fusion engine 1", ordered the Captain.

"Activated, sir", replied a young man behind one of the consoles.

"Activate proton fusion engine 2."

"Activated, sir."

"Activate proton fusion engine 3."

"Activated, sir."

Wait, did he just say 3? Destroyer class ships could only have two engines... right?

"Accelerate to 20 gu/s and keep us in the direction of Venus."

"Aye, sir."

They felt the ship moving - but it wasn't a hard feeling, like the feeling of a boat rocking or of a car accelerating. It was just a soft movement, gradually speeding up."

The Captain activated his intercom. "I want all non-important hands to report to the main deck immediately for a presentation." All of the officers departed the bridge behind Captain Hudson, except for a few that had to monitor the controls.

Once at the deck, the Captain stood before roughly 250 men and women, all rookies in the UGTO navy.

"I have a transmission to share with you all."

On a large projector screen appeared the face of Grand Chancellor Mato himself.

Suddenly they all realized that this mission couldn't have just been a normal one.

"You all are about to embark on perhaps one of the most important missions our Organization has ever faced, even since our Organization's founding to save humanity.

We've recently discovered allies in the universe. A race known as Gaifen, thought to be mindless spacecows, have begun sending messages to our sensors through encoded electronic signals. They have sent us schematics for new technologies, which we plan on using to destroy the most dangerous enemy we have ever encountered.

The enemy that has almost killed off the K'Luth race has finally been discovered. The K'Luth term for them, Kraddax, has a meaning similar to our Cerberus of ancient myth, and we now know why. They are a spreading threat, and one we have been at a loss to understand - they have no biological input in their ships. They are completely mechanical beings - and it is even possible that their ships operate with each other as one unit.

We've captured and reverse-engineered one of their scout ships, and we think we know where the central intelligence of this machine lies. The UWS Espero is the only chance we have to destroy them. Thank you."

Chapter III

When the crew were all either back at their stations or resting, the bridge officers had to remain on duty. Because the ship was new and many of its features were untested, the crew had to complete a few missions before they could let their guard down.

"Commander Tak, please brief me on the evaluation of our jump drive", asked Captain Hudson from his seat.

"Everything seems to be in order, sir, although I am not used to such technology... may I ask what sort of company designed it?"

"It is based off a design that we received during the messages from the Gaifen. It is able to travel much faster than ordinary Tachyon drives and even faster than the K'Luth antimatter drives, all while using less fuel. It uses an energy source very similar to our Quantum Singularity weapons."

"Quantum Singularity...? How can such a force be contained? We'll never leave Sol riding on a bomb like this!"

"That's what we have to find out, Commander," the captain said assertively. He was an older man, with a graying beard and a worn looking face. However, in his eyes and in the manner of his movements he suggested the power of a man in his prime.

"Helm, please navigate us 1500 GU away from Venus."

"The target is upwards of 30,000 GU away, sir", replied a young officer at the control.

"Commander Tak, please begin charging the jump drive."

"Aye, sir."

A low hum could be felt through the air and walls of the bridge, gradually increasing in strength."

"She's ready, Captain."

"Navigation, verify the path is clear and we are ready to launch."

"Affirmative, Captain. The ship is ready to jump," replied the man at the control.

"Prepare to make contact."

At once the lights in the bridge dimmed, and the humming become a loud roar that felt like it was shaking the entire ship, but without the movement - almost as if the walls were filled with energy waiting to be released.

"Launch."

The roaring of the engine suddenly stopped.

The bridge was filled with silence.

Jen Kastilo looked up at the Captain, who was sitting with a big smile on his face.

Still silence.

There were no beeps of the consoles, no clicking of boots across the floor, not even a released breath. Everybody was anxious.

Slowly the space before the ship, visible from the helm, appeared to fall into itself, before being consumed by a flash of white light.

And yet everything was silent.

Boom.

A roar overtook the ship with tremendous energy and most of the bridge officers slid from their seats at the end of this. Once again the bridge was filled with beeps and footsteps and talking.

"Captain! What happened?"
"Was there an explosion?"
"Can someone evaluate the damage?"

The room was filled with worries and panicked questions by the crew, but Captain Hudson just deeply laughed, causing the room to once again hush.

"Look!"

And so they did, and before them they saw a planet covered in oceans and old flat continents, specked with the small lights of civilization where the sun was not showing.

They were at Venus.

End of Chapter III

Chapter IV

Two weeks had gone by uneventfully as the ship travelled through space.

Jen awoke to the beeping of his alarm clock and rolled out of his bunk. The ship was somewhat comfortable, especially for the officers. Most of the male bridge crew, numbering about 20, were located in a wing near the bridge.

He groggily used the shower and put on his uniform before walking down to the nearest mess hall to get his 'breakfast'. There were several mess halls aboard the destroyer, and because of their rotating shifts, there were no designated 'breakfasts' - they just went to the cafeteria and got what they wanted, although every once in awhile one of the medical officers would nag them about fulfilling their nutritional requirements.

Jen ate, speaking to some of his subordinates. Normally in a military setting the officers are requested to separate themselves from the lower men, but this was a special situation. Kastilo was in charge of the fighter pilots, and these men were to fight with him and expected to die with him if so ordered.

The UWS Espero had been outfitted with a small hangar bay - yet another technological innovation that had been pushed into this ship. The officers often wondered why the UGTO was spending so much money on one destroyer, but none ever voiced this thought.

"All active bridge personnel please report to station."

Jen disposed of his dish and arrived at the bridge, where the other officers whose shifts had just begun were groggily taking their places.

The Captain entered and immediately perched himself at his seat.

"We will soon be pulling ourselves out of warp and approaching the Gate to Luyten. Once we make it to the other side, there will be a small escort group of the Navy to help us reach our destination."

This had become pretty routine, warping from one Gate to the next - but this one was special in that they would soon be leaving UGTO space. Kastilo felt hopeful that he would be able to prove his skills if needed, but he always thought about the old officer at the air field on Earth.

"You men will see quickly, that death is something that can happen to anyone."

As the Navigation crew brought the ship out of warp, it was noticed that there were two UGTO frigates patrolling the gate. This was not seen even in home space, at least since they left Sol.

They travelled through the Gate, feeling the familiar sensation associated with it - a slight pause in time, a heavy feeling of inertia, and a mild wave of dizziness. Using Gates was like taking a long, gentle Jump - perhaps only gentler because rather than being pushed forward by the aft, the ship was being tugged through space by the massive Tachyon engines in the Gate.

When they were on the other side, a face appeared as a projection on the central window panel. It was an older man, much like the Captain but with a shaved face and a crew cut, albeit with white hair but a tanned, young look. He wore a beige admiral's hat decorated with golden lace and a large brass UGTO logo, with a decorated leather bill. Captain Hudson stood and saluted the man.

"At ease, Captain. I'm glad to see that you and your crew have arrived safely. We've got orders all the way from the Grand Chancellor to keep that little sailboat of yours safe, so you can expect this to be a sound voyage."

"I'm glad to hear and honored to finally meet you, Grand Admiral Wagamon. The trip has been very calm - I can only hope that the rest of our journey will remain as such."

"I couldn't agree more, Captain. To keep you safe, we've got two Elite Assault Dreadnaughts, two Battle Cruisers, one Missile Cruiser, and several frigates and sensor corvettes to keep us alerted on any enemies trying to attack us. I have a feeling that any hostile thoughts will be forgotten when they see our fleet!," laughed the old Grand Admiral.

As the fleet travelled deeper into enemy space, Jen felt a sort of ominous worry, as if they had taken a step too far into the enemy space.

...death is something that can happen to anyone...

End Chapter IV

I'll try to keep adding more every night

Interesting so far, a Carrier Destroyer with highly experimental technology that will either work or explode. I'm Keeping my eye on this.
