For years the metaverse was the same. Skirmish, win, control; or skirmish, lose, fall back. The same systems had changed hands so many times that the inhabitants didn't even care aanymore. The UGTO and the ICC had been warring with each other over the same bombed out real estate for so long, they had forgotten the reasons for the war long ago. Yet it continued.
Upon graduation from the UGTO fleet academy, I was assigned to the corvette UGTOS Profound Profit. She was a handsome vessel, quick on the fly and as manuverable as an Arconian near-squito. Our assignment was to cover the scouts in ICC controlled systems. Occaisionally we lucked into a pirate near Euphartova, but it was mostly dull, grinding boredom punctuated by moments of howling terror when a cruiser would blunder into us. We had E-jumped so many times we had all earned Bronze Nav. badges after our first cruise. The firepower of a corvette is worth about as much as spit on an old fashioned griddle. We did manage to survive several close encounters with ICC destroyers but that was mainly fear and inexperience. We didn't know what our ships couldn't do and we took insane risks. We actually E-jumped between the binary stars in Lutyen without even taking a plot fix! That one cost us a lot of paint. 1 GU closer and we would have exploded into a cloud of ions. As the "captian" of that lifeboat in disguise, the cost of the paint came out of my meager resource budget.
After that first cruise, I made Ensign. Mostly because out of my class of 3000, 250 came back from their first cruise. As an Ensign I was assigned to the FA (Frigate, Assault) UGTOS Fearless. I loved my assignment to the Frigates. I had enough speed to escape my bad decisions and the firepower to make anythig less than a Dreadnought nervous (or so I thought at age 23 and as immortal as any young, brash idiot). My first cruise was also my first true brush with the war...........
"Skipper, you better take a look at these scan results." Scanner Tech. 1st Class Louis Japorsen was in my opinion one of the best sensor techs in the fleet today.
"What'cha got Louie?" I was inturruped from my thoughts of computerized revenge on my First Officer, who had just eked me out in our last tactics sim.
"Thats the problem, sir. I've got nothin'. Nothin' a'tall" I could tell when he was stressed. His North American accent came through strongly when he was nervous.
"Now that can't be right..... We founded a new colony hub in here just 2 months ago. We are still in Cincinatti right?" I checked the plot and the schedule to make sure. "Yeah...... Where the hell did they all go?"
Japorsen jerked in his chair as the report from CIC came in. "SIR! ICC Sensor Corvette bearing 180, range 327!"
"Evasion Plan Gamma! Tactical! Fire up the ECCM! Comms! Send a signal to Sector Command!" The commands came before I even engaged my brain. I did NOT want THIS bandit behind me. The only weapon covering that arc was a piddling little laser! ICC Sensor Corvettes can be some of the most dangerous ships in space when properly managed.
As we spun around, using our manuvering thrusters for that little extra oomph, Tactical came at me with "Skipper! two more bogies, same class! Bearings 120 and 165 range 1200! They just came out of jump!"
I smiled, "Well, well. Looks like they're a little rusty on timing. What do you boys think? Should we endeavor to teach them the rudiments of tactics?" My men smiled like near-sharks and growled.
First, a micro jump to string them out. "Helm! Give me a micro jump, bearing 093, 1500 GU only! Execute!"
"Aye, aye, Sir!" We had done this a few times before. First you string them out, hit them one by one, by sucking them in with a low velocity. The ICC Corvette captian did exactly what I thought he would do. He micro jumped after me, cutting himself off from support for those crucial minutes while his allies were stuck out of range recharging. We engaged in a violent, twisting dogfight remarkably similar to the ancient fights on Earth. We battered his stern shields and armor with laughable ease and left the first corvette a burning hulk, spewing life pods like a demon seed. We came around just in time for the other two, suitably warned of our tactics, to come barrelling in together. We hadn't come out of the first fight with a scratch. The second pair, we EARNED by God! We accepted the fire of one while pounding the other. Concentration of fire, that was the key to defeating ICC sheilds. UGTO's latest armor design, Ablative Plate, was crucial to our surving that barrage. The plates would blow off like scales right as the railgun rounds struck, deforming the rounds and reducing penetration by 50%. Now those plates are less than useless against laser fire so we hung back at extreme laser range since our ancient chemical beams were wasting tonnage, they couldnt do much againts shielded opponents anyway. The first one perished in an expanding ball of gas as our starbord armor collapsed under the pounding.
"Sir! Starboard armor down to 16%! Damage to sectors 13 and 14! Casualties from frames 16 to 20! Sickbay open to space!" The damage reports were grim but this last corvette, seeing plasma venting from a breached engine compartment near frame 19 must have smelled the blood in space. He closed working at the starboard hull with alpha strikes. I barked orders to the helmsman "Cut speed to 5.5 GU and hard a'port! Cover that dammed breach!" We had just practically tossed an anchor into a gravity well. With forward velocity cut that abruptly, we spun like a top. Our forward batteries locked and the Tactial officer stabbed the firing key with ALL the weapons. Chem lasers and all. We brutally poured the fire on, cutting in behind the corvette like a Porche-Benz 2511 behind a garbage truck. There was no escape and the gallant corvette tried an E-jump but came apart before the jump drive could take them away.
"Stand down from action stations. Damage control to the bridge. Corpsman to the bridge." Japorsen wouldn't be making Chief after all. His console had exploded during the enemy's final run, fragments from the console had penetrated his suit and he had bled out before the corpsman could arrive.
Sudddenly, the CIC called through the command net, "Sir! New bogey bearing 020 range 1200. Classify as Heavy Cruiser!" Great. That's all I needed. A big bad busybody to come messing with my battered little command.
Seeing the fear coming over the bridge watch, I called "Helm, are we lost? You didn't drive us into Epsilon Eridani when I was off watch, did you?" A weary chuckle came from the crew as he answered me.
"No, Sir. I did no such black magic. I got no idea where these goofballs think THEY are, but I belive its time for us to relocate post haste."
"Now Midshipman Ryan, I'm disappointed in you." The crew laughed heartilly at the poor Middy as I continued, "You know that the fleet trains officers to think, so why are we still here?"
"Aye, Sir. Forgive this lack of initiative. I wasn't sure if you felt suicidal today." The crew roared in approval at the Midshipman's quick wit.
We prepared to jump but were disappointed. "Sir, we ain't gonna be jumpin fer a bit." The engineer sounded a bit miffed.
"And why might that be?" I called back.
"Well sir, it might have something to do with that interdictor field that just sprang up on Outpost Kangaroo......... but I could be mistaken. You never know." The engineer had a sense of humor I didn't normally appreciate but was appropriate to the moment.
"Well, I guess we get to ask that cruiser what he wants then, don't we?" The crew looked a little down, but so was I. We were in no shape to tangle with a Heavy Cruiser, and we all knew it. The frigate Fearless was about to tangle with some serious heavy metal and we would lose. No doubt in my mind at all........
"Skipper, spatial anomoly detected................ Looks like a wormhole transit signature. Looks like its coming out abot 200 GU's from the Cruiser,"

More is coming tommorow I think. I've been working a lot for the holidays, and it's been putting the creative portion of my brain to sleep.

“Boyos, I think it’s time to leave this lovely patch of space. Eng, how much further do I need to get out from the planet to get our drive back?”
“Sir, the farther the better, but 1000 GU is the book number. Sometimes they are a bit deeper than that but mostly the book is correct.”
Tactical decided I wasn’t busy enough yet and tossed this in to the pot, “Missile separation! Vampire! Vampire! 4 bogeys, classify AR missiles………Sir, target is DISENGAGING?!?!” I felt like laughing my ass off at that moment. The tactical officer actually sounded offended that he was breaking off. We couldn’t even scratch his paint under normal circumstances.
“Tactical, burn down those missiles and give me a good look into that wormhole when he comes about. We have a station coming through and we don’t know whose it is. So get me that intel.” I was pretty sure we didn’t have any stations closer than sector command in Cincinnati but I could be wrong. Things change in war all the time.
“Eng, when we have the intel, I want you to get us the hell out of here, yesterday.”
“Aye, sir, can do. We should be clear in the next 200gu’s.” The engineer sounded upset, probably because he couldn’t get us out of here faster. Or maybe because the enemy had put scratches on his engines, I didn’t really care at the moment.
“Skipper, we’ve got some good news for you….” Tactical was practically crowing into the link.
“Well, don’t make me come beat it out of you, Ensign. Report!” I didn’t have time for the “good news-bad news” routine.
“Very well, sir.” The boy was definitely beaming now. “We have identified the origin of the anomaly…. It’s one of ours! I can’t get a solid scan on it through the wormhole but it’s one of our support stations. I’d recognize that signature if I was blind drunk on synthohol.” Well, this changed things dramatically. We weren’t going ANYWHERE. Not with the Admiral, whichever one it was, watching. “We are also picking up an couple of escorts, but we can’t ID them until they come through. The first should be coming in the next couple seconds…… Update! Two Gunboat Destroyers, one Battle Cruiser, one Interdictor class cruiser, one Agincourt Carrier and Support Station Flash have made transit. Destroyers are engaging the target. Interdictor active.”
“Take us in, helm. Let’s give this bum something else to think about. Wake up the Marines; they are going to visit our friend here.” The ICC Cruiser didn’t seem to care for the new force balance and attempted to run, but he was caught in the same trap we had been in just a moment ago.
“Tactical, pound his aft shields while keeping us on a zig-zag course; we don’t want to eat any more heavy rail rounds. Keep our speed maxed out, as we over-fly the bastard, punch the Marines at minimum range in assault pods.”
“Aye, sir.” Everyone cheered and we went in guns a-blazin……..
