CSS Reliant CDn-309
04/06/2436 Military Calender
Deep Space; Luyten System - Sagittarious Cluster

It was always easy to sleep while in deep space. One always got used to the soft humming of starship engines, seemed easier to fall asleep to that noise, at least until the red flood lights turned into bright white LED's. Stirring from a dead sleep, Jayke Shephard rolled over onto his back and just stared at the ceiling. His mind still in a half dream state, his mind replaying that doomed battle, starship hulls fragmented. Molten debries littering the planets orbit, and the final vision of a K'Luth Krill moving in for the kill.

Shaking his head lightly when the alarm finally sounded Jayke kicked his feet out over the edge of the bed while slamming his hand on the alarm clock to silence it. From there it was his usual routine, shower, shave and get dressed before heading to the bridge.

The CSS Reliant was a Combat Dreadnought class ICC ship. No where near as powerful as the Assault Dreadnought class ships, but Jayke was thankful for this since he didn't need to worry about watching the energy reserves. Stepping into the turbo shaft, Jayke keyed the commands for the Bridge. A sudden feeling of vertigo hit the pit of his stomach before quickly disappearing. The doors hissed open and he stepped out onto the metallic deck.

Around Jayke were different stations that lined the walls of the bridge, giving it a unique V shape with a central island for the commander to sit. This was a terrific bridge design, giving the Captain of a ship a 'central' point to oversee a ships operational status with ease, and it also put the Captain in WITH her crew instead of in a seperate room.

The Executive Officer, Commander Randal Holmes, snapped straight and gave a salute that Jayke could have sworn would break a normal mans arm. Holmes in mid stride barked, "Admiral on DECK!" with the ferocity of a drill instructor from boot. Though mid sentence Jayke just waved his hand giving the 'At Ease' gesture. Watching the forward monitors he strode up to the Captains chair and settled in. While not the most comfortable seating arrangement, it worked good enough. Accessing the charts attatched to the arms of the chair, he keyed in orders which then brought of a star chart on a holographic display. There he notied the Reliants current position.

"Helm course adjustment, five zero niner by seven four two."

Lieutenant Howard Jones pulled on the controls and the ship seamlessly arced and turned, "Course adjustment five zero niner by seven four two, Aye sir." Jayke just shook his head at this. He always thought Jones was trying to impress him sometimes, though normally never worked. Jayke had hand picked his crew when the ICC Security Council gave him command of the Reliant. Hours apon hours of studying potential prospects, Jayke settled with Jones. Smart kid, graduated top of his class from the academy when it came to starship navigation. Promoted three times to Lt Commander during the wars with UGTO in Banards Star, then demoted to 1st Lieutenant for insubbordination while in the face of MI raids. While he didn't share his open opinion like the Jones did, he was sure as hell one of the most reserved pilots in the fleet. He got the notion that if Jones stared down a K'Luth Krill, Jones would just laugh and tell it to 'kiss his grits' as he so elegently put it one evening.

Yawning a little, Jayke reached over and took a sip of his coffee which had been readily waiting there for him when he arrived. Feeling his senses finally wake up, he issued commands to the rest of the crew, "Tactical, keep all scanners hot for any Pirate activity, Weapons I want full power to all primary Heavy Railguns and keep all Chemical Laser batteries at 75% charge, begin charging of Ion cannon capacitors. Communications, monitor all broadband traffic, you let me know if theres even a hint of non standard frequencies."They all jumped to as quickly as the orders were given out. Holmes just chuckled under his breath while looking at a data pad, revising the orders that the Reliant had been issued.

-ICC Security Council hereby orders the CSS Reliant to join up with ICC Strikeforce near Ihzack and prepare for orbital bombardment. Reliant is to provide close cover fire support against any and all Pirate forces in the area. Be warned, UGTO and K'Luth forces have been detected on long range system scans, be prepaired for any possible contacts with these forces and respond accordingly as per standard military protocol.

Marshal Stanforth, ICC Security Council-

Jayke had been reading over the same objectives as well, then towards the end of the mission orders he pulled up a fleet dossier of what he was expecting to protect. The CSS Savage BXD-015, CSS Omega HTN-050 and the CSS Monitor HSS-079. A Bomber Dreadnought and its escorting transport and supply ship. A Dreadnought of that size could easily defend against Pirate Destroyers and Frigates, though Command probably failed to mention the presence of both UGTO and K'Luth forces. Probably another mission where his ship wouldn't even see combat, or so he thought.

"Sir we have an incomming priority alpha transmission from the attack fleet."Chelsey Rodriguez was one hell of a fireball. Usually things didn't disturb her to much, though this one slightly did, which sent chills down Jayke's spine, "Put it on main screen."She nodded and typed in the commands. A visual popped into view from the CSS Savage's main camera. Ihzack was in the distance, its major cities leveled, burning craters visible even from the distance the ship was sitting at. In the center of the screen a familiar sillouete. "Magnify and enhance that image there."

Rodriguez just nodded her head and danced her fingers over the controls. There she enhanced the image and magnified the ship signature. The unmistakable shape of a UGTO Dreadnought. "Helm give me full power to Tachyon Jump Drives. Get us in front of the fleet, I get the feeling this is going to get messy."Jayke looked over the picture again, the Dreadnought was facing forward with her batteries aimed directly at the ICC fleet. And he knew all too well, where there was one UGTO ship, there were five more lurking around.

Ihzack Orbit; Luyten System - Sagittarious Cluster

The Reliant dipped down as hard as she possibly could, the Quantum Singularity Torpedos flying past the ship as she narrowly avoided them. Thankfully when the UGTO Battle Dreadnought had jumped the attack fleet and opened fire, the Reliant jumped in shielding both the Transport and Supply Ship from taking fire, though the result was the Reliant's shields were taken down to 3/4 strength.

"Bring us about 80 degrees, weapons, charge Ion Cannons to full power, fire all railguns as we turn!"All stations jumped to their task as Jayke gripped the arms of his captains chair, his knuckles turning a ghostly white as the stars in the front view screen began spinning until the massive golden outline of the UGTO ship appeared.

Along the hull of the Reliant, the Heavy Railgun turrets sluggishly turned and charged, then fired their slugs. Within moments Jayke could see multiple impacts hitting against the UGTO ships hull, and the same could be felt on his end as the Tactical Officer, Nikolai Andrews spun about, "Sir! Shields down to one half, orders?"

"Adjust shield output to the forward emitters, give me half speed to engines. Weapons...FIRE!"The ship rumbled slightly as the two Ion Cannon ports on the front of the Reliant spat out two twin bolt bursts. The blue Ion blasts raced through space and impacted the UGTO ship in multiple areas. Jayke just grinned a bit, "Weapons, concentrate fire on the points that those Ion Cannon shots hit! Start venting their atmosphere!"

The Reliant spun at about halfspeed, all forward batteries began firing, the Heavy Chemical Laser and Standard Chemical Lasers charged a hellish red before disharging their lethal dose of energy. The Heavy Railguns did the most damage, the areas on the enemy ship that took the IC shots began buckling from repeated impacts before the hull finally gave, vention atmosphere which in turn caused the ship to start tumbling, something most ship captains called a "Death Dance". The HCL and CL beams tore a vicious path of destruction along the dreadnoughts hull. Starting from the open hull wounds the beams began effectively disecting the ship from stem to stern until the HCL beam caught the dreadnoughts reactor.

The ship lurched to one side, then mushroomed inside its own hull before exploding into multiple fragments. The center of the ship where the reactor had been located went up in a white plume. The hull and armor of the ship boiled, ripped apart, disappeared and when the energy finally subsided, only glowing molten pieces of metal drifted in space, quickly cooling to a dull gray.

Jayke sighed a bit then looked over at Rodriguez, "Contact the Normandy and her fleet and tell them to get here ASAP. I get the feeling that more UGTO forces will be on their way after this..."The Lt Comm just nodded her head and sent the message. Normally Jayke wouldn't call in for reinforcements, but if the UGTO dispatched a Battle Dread to this area, then it was likely a fleet of Torpedo Cruisers, and even worse, Elite Assault Dreadnoughts were close by. The CSS Normandy ADn-035 was an Assault Dreadnought class ship, with two Assault Cruisers and three Heavy Cruisers. Quite an impressive combat fleet, and more than enough to handle any UGTO reinforcements.

Looking at the destruction on the planet below he tapped his chin curiously before looking at the main monitor, "Tell the Savage to set up in orbit, alert the Omega to begin hot drop and send down a wing of fighters to scan the city surfaces. I want to know what the UGTO wanted from here.." The crew nodded to themselves and to him then went about their tasks. Holmes slowly strode up next to Jayke, he himself looking at the same datapad as before, except this time looking over ship status monitors and the local area.

"Why would the UGTO take such an interest in a Pirate Colony? It doesn't make any sense..."Jayke just shook his head and continued staring at the view screen. He saw how the craters were laid out, and already knew this wasnt the job of a UGTO taskforce. "This wasnt a UGTO attack. Something else did this, and if it was K'Luth, we would have already been surrounded and reduced to molten slag by now. Something doesnt add up."

The both agreed on that point. Sighing, Jayke stood up from his chair and stepped down onto the main level of the bridge near navigation, "Lieutenant Jones, if you even so much as pick up on the flicker of non ICC traffic, I want you to get us the hell out of here." Jones blinked a bit, then nodded his head, "Plotting randomized vector out of planetary orbit, relaying data to the Savage, and Normandy. Both ships confirm, and will transmit information to their fleets respectively." Nodding at this Jayke looked at the view screen again as the Omega began dropping hot drop pods into the atmosphere. He wanted answers, and he had a gut sinking feeling those answers were going to come at a high cost.

Seems a bit like Nylund's fall of reach but good work nonetheless.

Running. Thats all the marines from the 104th Infantry Regiment could do is run. When the troops landed a few days ago, all the major cities were basically gone, almost as if a battle had never occured. They scoured each city they came across from top to bottom and still nothing. That was until a few hours ago.

Some type of machines started running rampant all over the place, the first couple of marines just thought it was some new model of security drone that went haywire and joked around about it, the joking ceased when they were vaporized. Some people just vanished, others werent as fortunate and laid there on the ground, trying to keep their internal organs from falling over the ground.

It was something of a nightmare, and all the marines could hope for was getting their butts back into space. And lord help the men up in orbit.

Three days and contact with over 75% of the marines sent to the surface had been lost. Reports from one squad indicated some type of cyborgs or something along those lines were on the ground and attacking their forces. A second squad reported seeing something of the same, and also advised they found one survivor and were med evacing them to the Reliant. Jayke took the time to gather his thoughts as he stepped onto the landing bay just moments after the cargo bay doors closed and pressure was re-established in the bay.

A few marines ran out, then a medic with a hover cart wheeled someone off the shuttle. Jayke took a moment to get a good look at the persons face as they were rushed to the medical bay. Looking over his data pad he reviewed the units report again.

"This ain't nothing like a K'Luth attack...Their ground forces usually pulverize us to a pulp while their fleet shreds the orbital fleet to pieces. Thats a gruns worst nightmare sir, and something has these men spooked.."Jayke looked over his shoulder, his Chief of Security, Warrant Officer Thomas Powell stood there arms crossed a few feet away as he gave a low whistle to the scorch marks along the shuttles hull.

Jayke respected the man for his wisdom as a tactical commander ground side, having been a marine himself, he knew how the troops would react to things, and that in turn helped Jayke out in the long run.

"So basically your just confirming what im already thinking Powell?"The Chief looked at Jayke and just shrugged before heading off to the med bay to check on their new guest. Shaking his head a little Jayke turned on his heel and began heading out, "Chief Engineer, get that shuttle fixed up and off the deck, I want Strata Bombers ready to launch in one hour."The Engineer snapped at attention then went about handing out the orders.

Two combat ready fleets in orbit, two of the ships easily capable of levelling the planet flat if need be. And a fleet of heavy combat craft ready to pounce on anything that wasn't friendly. Jayke tapped his chin a bit lost in this thought while riding the lift back up to the bridge. Something didn't add up, and the Security Council knew more than they were letting on it seemed.

When the doors hissed open Jayke stepped out onto the bridge and dismissed any attempts at saluting him as he made his way to the command seat, "Bring engines online, shunt power to IE drives and our Tachyon Jump Drive. Weapons power up all railguns to full power, Tactical, bring shields online to full power. Helm, give me one third speed and match velocity with orbital spin and prepair to drop strata bombers."All stations had jumped to their tasks as he sat down in his chair, bringing up a comm line to the medical wing, "Status report?"

"Sir the patient is stabalized and responding well to the staff. Apparently the person we picked up is Commander Aki Chambers, a chief medical officer from the 4th Fleet."Jayke thought this over a bit, then looked at his staff roster. Out of the 1200 crew aboard the Reliant, command never assigned a medical officer to the ship, "Senior Officer, I am assigning Commander Chambers to this ship as of now. Your wing will follow her instructions from here on out, understood?"

The medical attendent blinked a few times and the orders finally sank in, "Roger that sir."Jayke then snapped the comm line off and looked out the view screens as he brought up the navigational map, as well as fore cameras to see what the rest of the fleet was up to. On the nav map, he could see that the Savage was doing the same, and also preparing to drop loads of MiRV Tactical Nukes to the surface, the Normandy and all other combat craft waited just outside of planetary orbit in a spread formation, as if waiting to net anything that jumped in.

Nodding his head at this, he reached over and keyed the comm link for shipwide, "This is Admiral Shephard, commence orbital bombardment, we are now at condition red, all crew report to your stations."Even though there was a good sized fleet protecting them, Jayke wouldn't take any chances, not with the number of lives on board the Reliant, Savage, and supporting craft. So now the question remained, what was coming their way that could scare a platoon full of seasoned marines to death? The question would come soon enough as Jayke saw the bright flashes of light from the nukes detonating on the surface.
