On Sag Hotha, the Leaph moon was barely visible now as the Sirius binary suns danced back and forth, slowly beginning to illuminate the retired Fleet Admiral's villa on the summit of a relatively low mountain in the equatorial region.

It had been 2 years since the brilliant, yet short-lived Fleet Admiral's career had come to an abrupt end when he had been found guilty of frolicking with the heir to the throne of a lesser K'luth tribe. The princess and him had been going at this ever since the Fleet Admiral escorted her to the Mycopia cluster for diplomatic talks with ICC officials. They had both fell for each other on the way there and enjoyed a passionate and steamy relationship until they got caught red-handed by the Queen's Secret Services.

Now he was left with nothing, no rank, no prestige and hence, no lady, he was now an infamous recluse, what kind of lady would be attracted to him now afterall he thought.

"Your behavior is unacceptable for a warrior of your rank and prestige." Psied the K'luth Tribal Leader Evil Bob at Diabo|ik's trial.

"But... since you served your race so well and helped save countless lives as well as getting rid of some of our fiercest enemies with gallantry on the battlefield countless times with minimal losses on our side, we won't banish you... Your fate will be much more cruel though, you are stripped of you rank and will go into early retirement, you will NEVER command a spacefaring warship EVER again! Effective immediately!"

I was floored, commanding a spaceship in combat was the only thing I did well in this life, that and courting the ladies, the Grand Admiral knew this. 2 years later I was still in a deep depression and had grown addicted to Grand Admiral Dj42's homemade "human blood wine" which I was sipping generously as I was looking at yet another binary sunrise.

That kind of show always stirred strange emotions in me, from incredible awe to downright anger. Awe, remembering the awesome battles fought on the bridge of his various ships around so many different stars... Anger, remembering that I would never experience this ever again because of a stupid affair with some princess who never psi-called again after I lost my rank.

As I was hitting my chair with one of my tentacles... A psi
message came in, it was Tribal Leader Smartin who had replaced Evil Bob as head of the military of the unified K'luth tribes.

The psi conversation went as follows:

"Diabo|ik, I'm not a K'luth who loses his time with meaningless protocols, I could have summoned you before me to tell you, but the truth is, we don't have the time for such insignificant protocolar details, the war with the Human tribes has worsened, we're losing fights... and systems, even our new home, Sirius, is now weekly coming under attacks by the UGTO tribe. This is unacceptable."

I acknowledged psionically.

"We've been putting back into service our retired high ranking officers and recommissioning old ships in an attempt to stave off the human advance"

Cutting him, I swiftly replied "I don't have any rank any longer, I'm just an old alcoolic fool now, what use could I be to our tribes?"

"Don't try that on me son , and you don't fool me either with your self pity Diabo|ik, you are reinstated to your former rank, a teleporter is waiting my signal to beam you to a shuttle that will take you to our shipyard in orbit, I'll fill you in on the details there, now get off your tentacles and snap to attention, that's an order!"

*A few hours later*

It was this bad... Human ships with superior weapons and defenses had come into service, slaughtering K'luth ships and their captains left and right in the last 2 years. New technologies, new ships, new designs, new tactics. I was like a midshipman all over again.

It was like being a midshipman all over again. Yet at my first sortie, I was given the command of an old Manadible class dreadnought that had been recommissioned after being mothballed before my "early retirement" 3 years ago. And I had been given enough latitude to modify it more or less to my liking.

I was back in business, and it felt strange, a mix of anticipation, excitation and a gut-wrenching fear... As I sat down in the captain's chair I began psi-transmitting my first real orders in 2 years...

"Ready or not... helm, set a course to Sirius 3's outside perimeter, I want to get out of jumpspeed far enough so they don't detect us before we cloak, set Antimatter Jumpdrive speed to maximum, engage!"

*A few dozen seconds later*

"We have arrived sir, orders?" Psied the ensign assigned to the sensors.

"Helm, half speed, heading 270-000. Sensors, cloak, scanners to maximum, and dim the lights on the bridge to 25%, let's see what's out there. Tactical, warm up our weapons, we might just need them."

As the old Manadible glided sneakily through space undetected, for the first time in years, Diabo|ik felt... alive.

As the old Manadible maneuvered in position to take a peek at the UGTO tribe's activities at Sirius 3, the fluctuating hum of the engines, the star backdrop, the familiar smell of asceptisation mixed and the tension of the adrenaline begginning to build up was like a "Welcome Home" party for me as an UGTO dreadnought appeared on screen. Carrier class. A few seconds later, one more contact came on screen, an engineering ship, probably sent from Earth to rebuild Sirius 3 for human colonization.

Old instincts took over as I psi'ed at the ensign to plot a course to maneuver behind the Carrier and in position for a deadly strike on the engineering ship.

"Maybe deterrence could work here, zapping that engineering ship out of existence could strike fear in the Carrier captains heart and he'd run far away from the planet, easier to hunt him down there than near planet defenses..." I thought...

As the ship approached within disruptor range I ordered the ship to decloak for a quick hit&run pass. As the old Manadible uncloaked, I heard the familiar noises from the scanners announcing that missiles had been launched from the planet.

"On my command, fire all guns... Now!" I psied. The disruptors struck first, followed by a volley of torpedoes, but these last ones we're too late, the ship had already jumped out to safety, badly hurt but still in one piece.

"Cloak now." I ordered to the ensign hurrily. As the ship began to cloak a strange device launched from the Carrier dread as well as a full squadron of human fighters shortly after.

"They were probably expecting visit" I thought.

"Helm, heading 190-000, evasive maneuvers", but it was too late the strange device had struck home and much to my surprise, hadn't detonated. I knew something was wrong as the tension on the bridge jumped up a notch and the rush of adrenaline from my crew almost filtered through my psi blocks.

I asked... "What's this thing?".

The 2nd in command replied "It's a human beacon sir, they modified it so that even when cloaked, they can detect our position and fire on us."

"What?" I made a mental note to psi-slap Tribal Leader Smartin pimp-style the next time I'd see him for omitting such an important information from the briefing.

The situation had turned 180 degrees on me, I went from the hunter to the hunted and I was in for a few other suprises as well...

"Nvm, ensign, uncloak! Helm! Maximum speed, evasive maneuvers, heading 345-000, let's get out of there" I psied as the ship repeatedly got shaken by a volley of particle cannons coming from the Carrier.

"Tactical, set all disruptors to point defense, let's take out as many fighters and missiles before they tear us apart, priority on missiles from the planet."

"Damage report" I psied.

"Left armor plate at 75%, aft armor at 60% and getting teared apart rapidly."

"What?!?, from one cannon volley and a few fighters? The Grand Admiral was right about those upgraded weapons... Send a distress signal with our coordinates and current situation, this is going to be ugly."

About 750 GUs later and a few more volleys of particle cannons, missiles and fighter fire, the old Manadible was crying for mercy, venting plasma and atmosphere from most decks, with structural integrity reaching critical levels.

"Ensign, how many GUs before we can jump?"

"2 hundred... ...sir, jump shockwave detected!"

"Friend or foe?"

"Friendly, it's Mersenne's ship, it's firing on the Carrier and attempting to maneuver behind it."

"Whew, have we managed to remove that... 'beacon' from the hull already?"

"Just a few more seconds... ...done."

"Cloak, now!"

"We are out of Interdictor range and the Carrier is retreating."

"Incoming transmission from Mersenne's ship"

"So now you know... but you do not know everything, get back to Sag Hotha for repairs, the Tribal Leader Smartin is waiting for you."

"What the?!?" I thought.

"Helm, take us back home, speed at your discretion, I'll be in my quarters."

As I was walking through the corridors of the Manadible to my quarters, I couldn't understand what had just happenned. The beacon, the engineering ship jumping out faster than anything I had ever seen before and the Carrier that seemed to be waiting for us as well as Mersenne's ship coming so fast to rescue us...

Something was up... Secrecy was something new for our race, ever since we first made contact with the human tribes, we've been getting better and better at it ourselves, devising ways to psionically block feelings, thoughts but nowhere near lying and omitting important information.

"Diabo|ik, we have arrived at the shipyard, shall we dock?"

"Go on, 2nd, signal the Tribal Leader that I'll be ready to meet him soon."

Back in my quarters I looked back at the recordings from the engagement, but I still couldn't figure out what had happenned. All of it seemed to be orchestrated, as if someone already knew what I'd do and how it would play out.

*A few minutes later in the Tribal Leader's office*

"Sit down" Psied Smartin.

"I'm waiting... Tell me what happenned." He continued.

"We arrived at Sirius 3 shortly after departing from the shipyard and cloaked outside sensor range. We approached undetected and our sensors indicated a Carrier and an engineering ship orbitting the planet. We attempted to destroy the engineering ship right under the nose of the Carrier in an attempt at detterence, but strangely, the engineering ship departed as soon as it got hit by our disruptors. I ordered to cloak the ship for another pass at the Carrier, but it had already hit us with a beacon and we were forced to uncloak and retreat outside the interdictor range. We sent a distress call that got answered swiftly by Mersenne's ship who saved our butt out there."

"All worked according to plan then." Psied the Tribal Leader.

"According to plan? What do you mean according to plan? Me and my crew almost died out there!"

"Sh sh sh Fleet Admiral, the plan wasn't to win. It was to teach you a lesson in humility."

"I don't understand sir."

"I know you Diabo|ik, you've been arrogant in the past, we can't afford to have arrogant captains anymore. As you must have figured out by now, I omitted to tell you a few things... It was part of the plan to teach you that lesson."

I was fulminating.

"Things have changed since our old heroïc days, we are once again a race on the brink of extinction, we must act accordingly, and adapt. That Carrier and engineering ship reacted this fast because shortly before your departure, Mersenne's ship had uncloaked in their vicinity. That way we knew they would be able to turn the tables on you."

I regained my composure despite my growing anger and frustration and asked:

"But why not just tell me?"

"Knowing things intellectually, even if it's thoughts of other captains experiences, isn't nearly as good to teach lessons than to actually live it. Your odds of escape were high enough to take that risk and looking at you now, I see that it was worth it. Now you'll be much more willing to listen and REALLY take into account what I will transmit to you before your next mission."

"I see..."

Not only the human ships had changed, we also had to adapt in more ways than I thought. Now I realised it.

"What can I do now?"

"Nothing, not before we refit that old Manadible with up to date equipment... ...Just a minute."

*A few minutes later*

"Change of plans Diabo|ik, one of our captains just got assassinated. He was the captain of a 'brand new' Chitin class ship. You and your crew are being reassigned to that ship at this very moment. The ship is docked in drydock 21 and waiting for you. I'll transmit your new orders to your quarters computer, password will be 'Scramble'. You're dismissed!"

As I wandered the corridors of the shipyard, walking toward drydock 21, I was thinking about what the Tribal Leader said about new equipment and the state of our race. The captains assassination... I was also thinking about the new "protocols". Omiting information, lying and passwords. This was unheard of before and it was quite unsettling. The only means we had of hiding our thoughts before were psi blocks imprinted on the captains minds so they'd stay cool and could calm down their crew in tensefull combat situations.

I really was a midshipman all over again, but this time, much more was at stake, bigger ships and crews and the fate of our race and all I had was my 2 year old experience to guide me and help us overcome overwhelming odds...

Note: Last part "Scale" class cruiser was meant to be "Chitin" class ship, edited the part accordingly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I was approaching drydock 21, something seemed odd... There were Guards of the Queen everywhere and even some Royal Secret Services agents.

"Control point, decline your identity" Psied one of the elite soldiers guarding the entrance to the drydock.

"Fleet Admiral Diabo|ik, I'm sent by Tribal Leader..." But before I could finish my sentence the guard psied:

"We know who sent you, now if you would kindly give me one of your tentacles for a DNA test..."

I did.

After a few moments, they let me through.

Before the door closed behind me I psied to the elite guard:

"But why all the..." *Door closes*

"You'll see..." answered the guard.

And seeing I was... Before my eyes laid a Chitin class cruiser of a configuration I had never seen before. The armor was laid out much like a Scale configuration with slowly pulsating plasma veins visible just beneath the organic armor.

At first I thought it was a Scale configuration with less weapons, but I was wrong.

As I surveyed the area, I saw multiple "lab rats" around the place, all busy and all very excited. As one of them passed by me I stopped him and asked him what I was looking at exactly. He seemed more than happy to answer this question and went on:

"Well, they haven't told you huh? Let me fill you in then. What you have before you is a CPW6"

Cutting him off I psied, "CPW6?"

"Yes CPW6, If you would kindly let me finish... As I was about to say, this is a highly modified Chitin class ship built as a last resort to help us fight the human tribes more effectively. As you know, C stands for 'Chitin', P for 'Parasite' and 6 is the number of the revision. W means 'Work in progress', in other words, it's a prototype designed to counter the new human designs."

After a short pause he continued...

"If you look closely, you'll see that we have modified the armor so it's got the same configuration of the current CS5 plus 1 more front organic layer. It's got all the armament of the last CP5, plus 3 additional high energy disruptors. But in order to accomodate these beam mounts, we had to remove the larvae launcher. We also replaced the 2 AM torpedo launchers for Shredder missiles, though it can be reconfigured to launch torpedoes instead of missiles."

"At the moment, it is fitted as follows:

3 high energy disruptors
2 energy leeching beams
4 disruptors
4 psi missile launchers
2 shredder missile launchers"

"Impressive," I psied. "But I think it would be best to modify the psi and shredder launchers so they can fire torpedoes, also 4 of the new and improved psi cannons would be more usefull than the old disruptors. And one more thing, why not modify the 2 ELF beam hardpoints so they accomodate 2 more high energy disruptors? But, oh well, it's just me!"

"Let me guess, you are the new captain aren't you?"

"Yes, why do you ask?"

"As you know, the last captain got assassinated under nebulous circumstances, seeing your uniform, I assumed you were his successor."

"What do you mean by nebulous?"

"Well... He was about to die anyway, he was sick and... *looking over my shoulder*... and I said too much already." Then he quickly went back to his duties.

I looked over my shoulder... no one to be seen... Strange indeed. But I didn't think much of it as I was so excited to try that brand new design in battle, and maybe the lab rat just had his superior psi-message him something important.

I boarded the ship and saw that a few last minute preparations were still underway, as I passed by a busy engineer, I asked:

"So when will this ship be ready to roar?"

"It is ready sir, but we already sensed by your conversation with the scientist on the drydock that you wished to modify all the missile launchers so that they could fire torpedoes instead. And that you also wished to modify a few more things as well"

"You read my mind right... but do go on."

*12 hours later*

"This is the engineering room, all off the modifications you requested are ready, the antimatter jumdrive and antimatter drives are online and ready to go at your discretion."

"Good, you can rest a bit now, you've done an outstanding job on this beauty."

Ever since I had boarded the ship, I had went through most of the documentation that Tribal Leader Smartin had downloaded to my quarters computer. All but the encrypted files...

"Computer, open folder EncOCPW6, password 'Scramble'" I psied.

A face appeared on the screen... A familiar face...

*A few years ago*

"I disagree with the Tribal Leader's politics... We should either be more cooperative with the humans or more aggressive, I can't stand that 'sometimes we discuss with them, sometimes we kill them' attitude anymore."

"I know Diabo|ik, but if we wouldn't be talking with them once in a while, I would've never met you on that day at Articus A, when you picked me up for the Mycopia summit."

"You're right... but what we're doing isn't, it can only lead to a ugly outcome, and remember the MIR, they are still out there, somewhere. If we don't either get rid of the humans or get their cooperation and a solid peace treaty, we could, once again, face extinction..."

*Back in the present*

My old love, my sin, my downfall... I never thought I'd see her again and certainly not under these circumstances.

"Helm, undock and set a course to Epsilon Ind, and don't take the frequently used trade lanes, we need to get there undetected, I'm on my way to the bridge."

"Sir? That's deep in human space, it won't be..."

*Looks at the screen and shut it off*

"Easy? I know... ...I know."

*Back on the bridge.*

As I looked at the carpet of stars that have become so familiar to me ever since my childhood, I couldn't stop wondering if I would ever be able to get back the status and respect I had thrown away so rashfully a few years ago. That last crypted file troubled me deep down in my core.

What was she thinking?

Second in command : "Leaving Sirius in 6-...-4-3-2-1-JUMP!"

*Somewhere on Flavin in the Epsilon Ind System*

"But we can't.."

"Yes we can. It seems it's our only hope, what do you want to do? Fight em to our extinction? Turn tail and leave with your tentacles between your legs? Run again from our nemesis? And then what? We build a new home again? And then what? The Mir will find us wherever we'll go... unless" Said a firm and determined female voice.

"That's ridiculous, as if the humans would start telling the truth all of a sudden. *looks at the human envoy* And that they'd need OUR help, have you lost your mind? Or maybe you've been with those humans for far too long."

"You old fools thinking you know it all, all you've done during your whole life is to wage war, and for what? All this and neither of the 3 major factions have made any progress, that's senseless. Only crazy people can continue to do the same thing thinking it will someday somehow lead to a different outcome."

A silence fell upon the room and you could see everyone weighting in her words and silently agreeing, everyone but the old K'luth Grand Admiral who was just about to burst before getting up and leaving the room in a dash.

"You haven't seen the last of me... princess." Psied the old K'luth from the other room to the young lady still sitting at the table.

"Old nostalgics..." "And I'm no princess, my tribe is gone, except a few stragglers here and there, gone... forever. But I WILL go forward." Thought the young lady.

The human 1st rear admiral of the ICC freedom fighters faction rose up, seeing and also SENSING the tension in the air.

"We should continue this later, *looking at the lady* I believe your government has ordered one of their top agents here to help us with this matter. He should be here by tomorrow morning, We can then continue with our heads, and hearts rested."

"You're right Rogue, I adjourn this meeting. It will continue tomorrow morning at 10 hundred standardised galaxy time. I suggest you take some much needed rest, and distract yourself with what we have at your disposal here" she said out loud. *Looking back at Rogue* Meet me in the lounge, in 10 minutes, we need to talk." she psied.

"I will." he thought. And the newly developed psi relay implanted just at the base of the neck of the 1st Rear Admiral transmitted the thoughts to the lady at the push of a subdermal button on his finger.

"I'm starting to like this thing." "Maybe it wasn't that bad an idea to cooperate in joint ventures in research and development with this spiritual K'luth movement, after all, they pretty much match our thoughts on the major subjects." Thought Rogue. *Looking at the lady leave.* "And it's got it's advantages..."

Fast forward to 9 hundred hours, the next day.

*On the bridge of the Parasite Prototype.*

Second in command: "We just got the coordinates, we are to drop down on the surface of Flavin at the following coordinates."

A stream of numbers flashed in my mind as the 2nd in command transmitted the coordinates.

"You got the go 2nd, engage the jumpdrive at your discretion, minimum power usage on every other system."

The Parasite suddenly lurched forward...

"ETA, 76 seconds."

"Good, helm, as soon as we re-emerge in normal space, engage cloak and slowly drop us down to those coordinates..." I psied.

As the Parasite class chitin cruiser re-emerged into normal space and Flavin filled the view, memories flooded back to me, engulfing me, torpedoes flying, missiles tracking, lasers and disruptors dancing, explosions left and right. And the view of the tribal colony of my dear love, being mirved by UGTO bombers...

"Not what it once was... But it seems they rebuilt, something's off tho."

As they descended into the atmosphere and the cloud coverage cleared up, it became quite apparent that something was really off, the view was surprising, human buildings, beside K'luth ones, all arranged in a mandala like fashion around a central, massive structure bearing both K'luth and Human architectural traits.

"Amazing." I psied
