The Mir

Eons ago in the ancient galaxy a species dared to touch the stars. They were the Forerunners, the Progenitors, the Ancient Ones who came to the Orion Arm in search of new worlds on which they could foster life upon. They came to Earth, so long ago, and observed its creation and pondered upon what life forms may develop upon its molten surface. They came to the K’luth worlds and found them growing quite well in their environment and thus began to influence their development. They breeded the K’luth with telepathic abilities and tried to remove the more violent genetic strands that were predominate in their DNA to the best of their abilities. This was their prosperous age. They ruled the entire galaxy. Every planet was under their influence and control. They did not, however, control the races they created, nor the machines upon which they entrusted all of their knowledge to. Forerunners were not immortal by any means and they knew that their time would come to an end. They wanted the younger races to achieve the glory that they once knew and thus left every micron of available data in the great MI. It was the pinnacle achievement in their empire, the creation of a totally autonomous creature with sentience and the ability to derive from right and wrong.

But, there was a malfunction. The great creation of the Ancient Ones became damaged. It turned on their masters and used the vast knowledge against them. The MI created millions of machines, each alive in their own right. It used its creations to destroy its former masters and within four-hundred years the Progenitors had been wiped out. None of them survived the carnage and the MI decided that with its masters destroyed, it could safely go into hibernation to keep itself stable. So the great MI slept, and its creations roamed the galaxy searching for any remains of the Ancient Ones Empire. They would go unchallenged for nearly one thousand years until the day that the life forms which the Ancients had fostered dared to once more touch the stars. The great MI aroused from its slumbering state, realized that deep inside its memory banks it had knowledge of the Biologics and that one command had been inserted in its place: Destroy.

Chapter One

Captain Sanders had always been an ambitious man. He had flown through the old Nicea cluster, he had ran Organization blockades, but now it seemed that his scheming career was at an end. Sanders looked up from his controls which he had been wrenching at a few moments earlier and saw the U.G.T.O. Battlecruiser Vigilant with its tractor beam firmly placed on his transport. He sighed and turned on his ship-wide comm. link, “Johansson, I want you to dump the cargo as soon as you can and try not to jettison it on the same side as the cruiser this time.” He turned back to the blinking icon on his counsel showing that there was an incoming message. He sighed once more and turned it on. He immediately regretted it. The face of a female captain was displayed on his small comms screen, “Sanders! I should have known it was you! Turn off your engines and prepare to be boarded, this is your only warning Sanders!” the screen blanked out and Captain Sanders slumped back in his velvet chair. I should never have tried to smuggle out those nuke mines. His wrist beeped. He looked down at it and pressed against a small metal button above the watch face. “What is it Johansson?” He waited a few seconds for a reply before turning it off.

Sanders stared blankly as a small infantry pod launched from the Vigilant and moved towards his aging transport. How did she find me here? Better yet, why is she here? He stood up and walked out of the cockpit. There was no real need to put the autopilot on, not with an Organization Cruiser locked onto you. He walked down the ramp and into a small elevator. He went down three decks into the main cargo bay and saw Johansson ordering maintenance crew members and droids around. She walked up to Sanders with a huge smile on her face. “Cargos all out Captain, and this time its going the opposite direction of the cruisers.” Sanders laughed silently to himself. Even though we’re all about to be arrested and sent to some two-bit penal colony she is still joking around. Heh guess that’s why she’s stayed on board for so long. “Still senile as always I see.” She tried to look insulted but he frown ended up going back to a huge smile again. “Well, Captain, think they might send us to prison this time? Or will your pirate buddies break us out again like the last time?” Sanders thought for a moment about the pirates, but was interrupted by a long snap-hiss of a pod docking in an airlock.

Johansson and Sanders walked to the airlock door and waited for the pod to finish decompression procedure. Three doors consecutively opened to show a small squad of U.G.T.O. soldiers walk onto the cargo bay deck. A short stubby man walked up to Johansson and lisped, “Are you Sssanderss?” Johansson giggled but stopped after she saw the man was quite serious and instead said, “Uh, no.” The short man side-stepped over to Sanders and asked the same question, “Are you Sssanderss?” Sanders only nodded and watched as the man gave a small nod to a 1st Lieutenant. “Alright men round up all the cargo and take it back to Vigilant!” soldiers scattered around in an attempt to obey their orders. The short man looked back at Sanders and said, “You are to come back with me; you and your wife”. The simple stare that Sanders gave the officer readily made it apparent that the two were not married. The short man shrugged and grabbed Sanders arm.

Johansson followed them to the pod, seeing that two other soldiers had decided that they would take position behind her in an escort attempt. She scowled and trailed behind the officer and Sanders. I wonder if the pirates really will help us out this time. McCormick owes us one. She saw a soldier get closer to her out of the corner of her eye and instantly turned on him, “Need something Ensign?” The soldier stuttered an attempted response before she turned back to walk with Sanders. The officer shoved Sanders into the pod before saying, “I change my mind. You may stay missss” and slammed the pod door shut in her face. She stared blankly for a second, thinking about what to do now. Guess I should give these idiots the slip now and see about that IOU. Johansson moved back into the cargo bay and started shouting random orders to her crewmen. “Spike, get back to work! Who told you to stop? Chris, move that crate over to the left side of the bay, yes the left side.” She observed their movements like a hawk before turning back to her quarters.

Johansson took long strides past the guards and into the elevator and was relieved for the privacy she could finally receive. As soon as the doors opened she jogged up to the bridge and hit the comm. channel that McCormick had given them a few months ago. She immedialty got a response, “Who is this? This is a private channel!” She laughed silently to herself, “This is Andrea. Mark, I need to speak with McCormick, Sanders got in trouble again and this time he might not get out of it.” She waited for a linkup with McCormick’s channel. The channel clicked, “McCormick here”.

Chapter Two

The darkness is a cold place. So cold. So silent. The minds of my people do not dare wander into this place. Why has it chosen me? Why not someone else? It usually chose the elders, never the young ones. Why me? It sat there in the darkness. Cold, utterly alone, watching the small walls pulse with light. It had been abducted from its homeworld. Same as most of its species. Every year the automatons razed their villages to the ground and took hundreds of people. It usually took the older once, the ones with knowledge of their past, but now it was moving into the younger generations. It was afraid of the great metal beats that had engulfed it. The machine had kept it alive though, and had forced it to watch the others who were taken become one with the machine. Dying instantly as their biological materials were absorbed into its walls. Why me? Why not someone else? Why did I have to watch them die? It slumped it back against the wall.

A voice whispered inside the small room. It looked up and looked around with its magnificent eyes. Nothing, or was it something? It looked back down at the pulsing floor underneath its feet. The machine looked alive, its metal heart beated like its own did. A whisper once more. It looked up again and stood up. It was seven feet tall and was trapped in a room exactly the same height. It looked closely at the wall and saw the source of the voice. It was an alien skull; roughly the size of a small hand and it pulsed with the walls. “I am here for you ancient one.” It looked at the skull and studied it. It studied the item for a long, long time. “I am here for you ancient one, my master.” It snorted and turned its back to the skull. It reappeared inside the wall it was facing now. “Master……master…..why do you shun me master…” It concentrated its mind in an attempt to block out the voice, but it only got louder. “Master! Tell me who to kill master! I will kill any Biologic you command me to master!” The skull reorganized itself into a skull of the creature. It staggered back against the other wall and found arms reaching out for it. It’s going to kill me then? Finally I may die.

The arms grasped the ancient scaly body and pulled it into the walls. Small nanoids attached to its skin. What…what are you…….doing to me? The nanoids spoke one at a time, “You are our master! We must obey you master! Do not you want power master? We wish to give you power master! We wish to make the galaxy obey you master!” It shuddered, it did not know what a galaxy was, what these tiny things were, what they were doing to it. “Master! We wish for you to lead us master! Become us, lead us, show us the way! You are our mind, master!” The nanoids were singing in unison now, “You are our mind, master! You are our mind, master! Lead us to the Path, master! Lead us to the Path to EARTH!” The nanoids screamed that final word. That dreadful word which was worse that a curse upon its soul. The word of the planet that could end the machines. The word of Death for the Mir.

The finish for this chapter will be coming soon

Hehe this is the first DS fiction I've actually decided to read , it seems pretty interesting so far, with the multiple-plot aspect that seems to be quite a trend. IMO, when I read the first paragraph, all I could think of was Starcraft's Protoss, the failed telekinetic race who rejected their 'fore runners.' GJ btw

Verown...good writing! Now THIS part should be official Darkspace history...or rather, could be. Perhaps the established storyline is different, but in my opinion, this certainly is a feasible background.

Start of Chapter enjoy

Chapter 3

"McCormick here, what is it Andrea? Mark said it was important and you know how busy my schedule is." Andrea smirked and dwelled on the proper response for the Pirate King, "McCormick, you owe us one...and uh, Sanders is in U.G.T.O custody onboard the Vigilant. I need you to break him out." McCormick's usual cold features brightened for a moment and a small smirk appeared on the old pirates face, "So, Sanders got caught eh? I knew that smugglers days were numbered! So, you want me to break him out then? It will cost you Andrea you know I.." He was cut off sharply by Johansson, "McCormick you OWE us one, we rescued you from that I.C.C fleet and let you go without a word." McCormick's face seemed to fall into a deep thought mode for a moment before he replied, "Very well Andrea, but only because you two sprung me out of that one. Which ship was it, the Vigilant?".

Andrea smiled and nodded before turning off the channel. She moved to the sensors control pannel on the ships nueral-menu and activated the ships ecm device. She next ordered the ship to autopilot itself to Demaret where she could meet McCormick and his allies. All she needed to do now was turn on Sanders hidden beacon device and try to communicate to him that help was on the way. The question was, how?

****************************************

Sanders sat silently on the bunk that the Captain of the Vigilant had so graciously given him. He sighed and began to think about the nuke mines he had failed to transport and how unhappy his I.C.C. customer would be. He shifted his mind to Johansson. She would probably try to break him out, not because she loved him, but because she respected him. At least that was his own understanding of it. He began to twiddle his thumbs. These cells are so boring. Why can't they ever put a nice TV in here or something, or at least give me a stunner to target practice with. Bah, U.G.T.O. soldiers never really understand the word 'pleasure' I guess. The door beeped and a soldier walked in, weapon placed against Sanders skull.

Sanders looked briefly at the soldier and turned his attention to the nozel of the rifel pointed at him. A tall female officer walked briskly into the small detention cell and immediatly began the interigation, "Where were you born." Sanders sat cooly gazing at the nozel of the deadly weapon and responded, "North American continent, Earth, Sol system, Milky Way Galaxy, Local Group." The officer smirked slightly, "Now what was the cargo you jettisoned into the local star and why did you ship beam a transmission into deepspace after we broke orbit?" Sanders eyes flickered for a moment. Had she done it? Had she contacted the Pirate King?

Sanders decided the best decision would be the good old cold shoulder while he contemplated how to stay out of the penal colony as long as he could. If Johansson really did contact him then she would no doubt be trying to send the message to him via his beacon. If he recieved the data via the neural-link then he would know the exact time and place of his rescuer. He started to formulate a plan.

Chapter 4 coming up later

Edit: I may need to rewrite the history of the mir i have in chapter 1, its not entirely accurate and i like to make my stories as accurate as possible.

Chapter 4! Hopefully everyone will enjoy it, if any suggestions please comment

The machine. The dreadful creature which had torn its mind away from its body. It had become One with it. It was the machine now. It knows everything that it knows. It can feel what it feels. It sails through the black seas of the heavens, foever sailing, forever...hunting. Not instincts, not will, just a...a need to kill. To destroy something. Four arms, something called a Biologic, a K'luth. Something inferior to the machines and their power, but it was beaten by them. Something happened.....searching foever searching...it was....damaged.

Why was it damaged? Why did it care? It was One with it now, it must care. Why should it merge with him though? He was just a plain, normal citizen of his village. A voice like the ones from before whispered, "You were seeded. We need you to survive. We must destroy the K'luth, it is our purpose, our objective, our reason for existence. You are the catalyste, great mind ." He wondered some more before a sharp pain stabbed his side, no not his side, his hull. He concentrated on the pain and a picture of a gash in the side of him appeared.

He cringed as he slowly realized what he was now. He was a machine, a MI automaton. He looked into the knowledge he possesed, the memory banks. He saw something, a giant thing, something the size of the world he came from. A planet, dark, looming, empty of life and warmth; cold. He recieved something, information, about a species. They were new, unknown, but they scared them, it scared them all. He recieved an order via the new nueral-link he had with the machine. The order was simple, destroy the near species after taking a biological sample. He writhered in his mind as an overbearng presence filled it.

The presence tore apart his memories, his feelings, his thoughts. He shuddered as it literally dissected his brain while he piloted the ship through the vast wastes of space. He suddenly became aware for the first time in his existence. He became a catalyst of understanding and for a moment understood why the MI had become interested in him. Suddenly a massive pain and the knowledge he had just accumulated was erased, his awareness obliterated, and a subtle soothing sound came to him. He must not try to become what he was not, he must become what he was now. He must become the Mir.
