Hey Guys. Fattierob here. I know I haven't written a fanfiction in a while, but here it goes. Theirs a lot of background and terminallogy you need to "brush up on" to get it all, but hopefully you'll all enjoy it

Note: This fiction takes place in the year 2260, near the birth of the ICC. During this time period, the UGTO fleet is large, although outmatched in terms of technology and training. The ICC is on the defensive after taking two systems earlier in the year, and are defending at Ihzack against a massive UGTO fleet.

However, because this is before the common UGTO inventions such as Particle cannons, Proton Torpedeos, and other standard issue weapons on UGTO ships, one can only come to the conclusion that both sides equiped gaass cannons (Or some similar type of magnetic metal launcher. gauss cannons make it easier to relate to current day weaponry). While writing this, I decided that ICC ships having long range firing weaponry makes more sense for their "defensive" positioning, while the UGTO fleet is technologicaly inferior, having only medium ranged chemical lasers and primitive torpedeo launchers. Also, Because of the weak array of weapons, but assumbly strong ammount of research in defence (Shield technology is in full swing, while UGTO armor is outdated, and in some cases obsolete), the ICC have a clear technological advantage in this battle. Of course we all know the outcome now, but back then, the world of the old was meeting the world of the new.

Please Note that the terms signifying class rank (Ie: dreadnought, cruiser, etc), are quite different from the current battle class. Dreadnoughts of 2260 could be compared to cruisers of today. As ships add on more and more weapons, one can only assume that the old class ranking will become even more obsolete and obsecured.

ICC 1st Fleet:

Fleet Admiral Shi Jie Shen's Dreadnought "C.S.S. Harima" (Command Dreadnought outfitted with gauss cannons/pulse lasers and extensive shielding)
8x Missle Cruisers (AR Missles only)
3x Heavy Cruisers (Replace railguns with gauss cannons, and give it another full arc)
7x Assault Cruisers (A 2260 heavy cruiser with more speed, for the price of some pulse lasers)
10x Combat Destroyers (These destroyers have extensive shielding for this battle. More will be revealed later)
4x Sensor Frigates (More or less a sensor base with an IE engine. no weapons worth nothing, except 2 full pulse lasers)
*Various non-combatant repair ships and sensor platforms (Not technically under 1st fleet control, but used in defence for the planet)

ICC 6th Fleet:

Vice Admiral J. S. Thompson's Heavy Assault Cruiser "C.S.S. Vanguard" (Quite mauneverable, with a good ammount of weapons to boot. little shielding, with reflects his battle tactics of fast and mauneverable ships hitting hard)
3x Heavy Cruisers (Same as above)
5x Assault Cruisers (Same as above)
5x Escort Destroyers (Primitive pulse lasers and a bit more shields then a 2260 combat destroyer)
3x Sensor Frigates (Same as above)

Combined ICC Total:
1 x Command Dreadnought
11x Missle Cruisers
6 x Heavy Cruisers
13x Assault Cruisers
10x Combat Destroyers
5 x Escore Destroyers
8 x Sensor Frigates
----------------------------
54 total ships, excluding non-combatant repair ships and sensor platforms

UGTO 2nd Fleet:

Fleet Admiral Yuki M. Halsey's Command Dreadnought "U.W.S. Zaandam" (Command Dreadnought with the [then]latest command systems and FCS [Fire Control System]. No real modifications, except some improved engines then standard)
2x Battle Dreadnought (Guns. Guns. Guns. No speed. Lots of forward (120~ degrees) arc)
10x Battle Cruisers (Fast, meant for dueling and circling ICC ships, overloading shields with continuos weapon fire, etc)
10x Gunboat Destroyer (Fast, mauneverable. Little weapons, but they are usually the first ones in and the last ones out.)
5x Harrier Frigates (Again, Fast and mauenverable. Little armor, but decent laser weapons)

UGTO 4th Fleet:

Rear Admiral Zackary P. Johnson's Battle Cruiser "U.W.S. Tetwep"
Unforuntly, much of the data about the 4th fleet is unkown. Some resources suggest it was put together around the Ross Cluster quickly and ineffectinly, leading to a general low morale amongst those offical UGTO officers serving on itserving on it. Their role in this battle is minor how it is, but their numbers were on par with the ugto 2nd fleet. In terms of skill, that is a whole another story.

Ugto 7th Fleet:

Rear Admiral Chris P. Zawaz's Missle Cruiser "U.W.S. Tempest" (It's a missle cruiser. Duh. Lots of missles. let's go with that)
9x Battle Cruisers (same as UGTO 2nd fleet)
10x Gunboat Destoyers (same as UGTO 2nd fleet)
10x Missle Cruisers (Lots of AR missles)
13x Intercepter Frigates (oddly enough, these ships were lighter on the lasers then most UGTO ships of the time period, focusing instead on the mass drivers of that era)

Combined UGTO Total:

1 x Command Dreadnought
2 x Battle Dreadnoughts
19x Battle Cruisers
11x Missle Cruisers
20x Gunboat Destroyers
5 x Harrier Frigates
13x Intercepter frigates
----------------------------
71 ships total, excluding 4th Fleet. This would lead to think that 4th fleet would have added in 91 ships to make the well-known 3 to 1 ratio of ugto vs icc; an impossible number back then. More then likely, the ratio was probably <2 to 1 with history being written by the victors to blame once more

Character List:

Shi Jie Sheng - Age 36 (at time of battle)

The brillant Commander/Strategist, Fleet Admiral Sheng is the 'god' of the ICC, worshiped for his personality, his ability to lead outnumbered troops into glorious battle, and (secretly) his ability to swoon the ladies. He is a strong man, who knows what he is doing, even when he is loosing (those rare, rare, times.). He doesn't take lightly to insubordination, but he also realizes that one must keep an open mind in any tactical situation. He is good friends with James Thompson (Discussed later)

He is also the metaphorical sense of the ICC itself, starting off as an infant at an orphanage in Exthra, he soon turns into one of the most powerful men in the universe.

J. S. Thompson - Age 44 (at time of battle)

James Thompson has always been a good friend of Shi, and, more importantly, an advocat supporter of his policies. Although some would immediatly point out that James would feel some resentment for being outranked by somebody 8 years younger then him, he knows when somebody is superior to him. Loyal to the ICC, he would never do anything that he feels would weaken it, and concedes almost all battle strategys to Sheng. Always the good friend, Thompson is willing to take the bullet for his friend, and vice versa. They are usually in the recreation area, discussing battle strategies, lives passed, or just shooting the breeze.

Yuki Halsey - Age 58 (at time of battle)

Halsey is your typical run-of-the-mill UGTO Admiral: stubborn, old, and full of battle strategy. A bit overconfident, he is certain that his numerical advantage and use of time tested strategies will win the day.

Zackary Johnson - Age ??

Not much is known about this Invdividual, even in the ICC knowledge network.

Chris Zawaz - Age 26

Zawaz (prounounced "Zah-Wasz") is young, for a rear admiral in the UGTO Navy. Unproven in combat, he usually prefers the UGTO missles instead of the more traditional lasers. Although most of the other admirals like to say behind his back he prefers this because he is scared of rushing into battle for glory, Zawaz has a keen eye for the future - and knows what is going to happen without his support

February 16. 2260 CE. Luyten

After a declartion of war from the UGTO senate on July 23rd, 2258 the ICC siezed the systems of Ross 248 and Epsilon Ind with little retaliation from the UGTO forces. In reality, the UGTO fleet was preparing for the ICC to attack Luyten, where they had set up a trap to corner the ICC Fleet at Ihzack, which happened at February 16th, 2260. However, Fleet Admiral Shi Jie Sheng, Founder of the ICC and a brillant strategist, had his own little trap in mind...

"Admiral Halsey," A voice came from the rear of the bridge. "7th Fleet is in position. 4th fleet estimates another 15 minutes". Yuki Halsey grunted at this, and lowered the brim of his Admiral's cap. He never had much respect for the 4th fleet and its crew, but a ship was a ship in this battle. His mind was going over possible battle strategys, noting the extremely unorthodox positioning of the ICC ships. In the back of his mind, he was already going over the victory speech.

Rear Admiral Zawaz grunted and lowered the brim of his polished admiral hat. Although the polish hadn't actually had enough time to fade since he got it, he still polished it everyday. It was a mater of pride to him, but it was also a matter of his intellegence - he never let the two mix. "Ugh, what are we waiting for?" he mumbled a bit loudly on the bridge, as he slumped in his captains chair and glanced around the bridge, wondering if anybody would answer the rhetoric question. The INTEL officer was madly trying to keep all of coms in order, and furiously reporting locations and strategic what if's to all the ships. Nav was doing nothing at the time, but the Lead Navigator was too uptight for his liking. Helm was busy monitoring the data the intel officer was throwing at him, but he was sure he heard a "...Next Patch" from him, and he smiled at that. He strained his neck a bit to look at the weapons officers, but she was busy going over the weapons. He knew, that these were all capable competitent officers, but he wished they would lighten up a bit more.

---Meanwhile, at the C.S.S. Harima....

Shi Frowned. And when Fleet Admiral Shi Jie Shen frowned, something was going terribly wrong. He glanced at the lightboard which showed the general area of Ihzack. The planet was near the end of the board, a small portion of it taking up a large portion of the board. His fleet was marked with Differently Placed Pieces, Continuly Updated by radar scans and tags by his trusted intel officer. He Was worried at the UGTO placement, it was far too bold for such a thing. The small sensor platforms they had managed to deploy showed only a small portion of their fleet, only around 50-60% he estimated. Even with the numbers on this board right now...I don't know if we could win His mind went on. This plan better work, or our journey to the Sun could end here...He looked at the deployment, and wondered what in the universe made them think he didn't have his own plan...

"Admiral! More Contacts, placing dots now, sir! Looks like the UGTO 4th Fleet is in Position. Marking Flagship....done, sir"
As his intel officer said this, more dots appears on his limited sensor range. He glanced at the number and type of ships and surpressed a whistle. Those were a lot of UGTO ships, and they were going to come screaming in, firing like bats out of hell at them; Missles flowing from that blasted Zawaz and his fleet....while their escape route was cut off because of a blunder on his part. He was worried, but it didn't show. He must remain their Unwavering god, a stonewall in the face of the oncoming train...

The mainscreen that occupied the northern part of the bridge turned on and a face he knew all his life popped on - Admiral Thompson. "Hidely Ho Neighbely...o. Whatever. How's the battle preperation Going Shi?" Their was a minor pause, as Shi smiled inwardly to himself at the man's bluntness. Some of his bridge officers chuckled a bit, ane Shi responded: "Well, it could be going faster if somebody didn't overload the fusebox..."The bridge crew laughed, and Thompson turned red on the viewscreen, although he was grinning himself. "Well, I suppose it would." His face went serious; "...I hope this plan of yours works, Shi. This going to be an insane battle if it doesn't." Shi smiled: "When have they not?"

---------End Part 1-----------------

Terminalogy:

Lightboard - A board of light that is produced by a series of highly focused lasers. Requested by Admiral Shi Himself for his personel command dread. Although the technology is old, it is still highly reliable and accurate. Mostly used by the intel officer to display data of fleet movement, it can also display text based words (another glass overlay) superimposed.

"...Next Patch" - an in-joke around the UGTO about the lack of doing anything until the next weapon upgrade, or system upgrade, or whatever R&D cooks up.

"..overload the Fusebox" - Admiral Thompson once ordered(many years ago) his Chief of Engineering to Increase the power to all weapons by 50% during an intense battle with a group of pirates, much to the Chiefs Objection. The ships power grid promtply overloaded, and his ship was out for the rest of the battle. It has become much of a joke around the ICC, "Fifty Percent more or bust" being one of the more common ones and "My Ship for an Extra Joule" more heard with the engineering staff

Extra note: If anybody has read the Darkspace History, please do not spoil anything for anybody else. Thanks.

For some reason, I love all the technical stuff like what you've done, and step by step histories (heck, I found the LotR history appendices thrilling). Keep it up, matey.

YIIMM: Truth be told, the technical stuff is what is delaying me alot: I want to take my time in fleshing out tecnhology taht is 260 years advanced from us

Coeus: Interesting Idea. I'll make sure to include a Cameo if I can't work it in somehow. Actually, It may just work to my advantage.....I needed a ship that was "overpowered" for this battle.

You thought I was done with this?

---------------------------
"Admiral Halsey. 4th Fleet is in position". The intel officer spoke those words, and the bridge silenced. Admiral Halsey stood up and adjusted his shirt. "Men...I was going to give some kind of grand speech to be written in the history books..."He paused and looked around his bridge. Most of the officers were looking at him, bewildered or grimicing. He gave a laugh "I kid. Let's get this show on the road. Tell 4th fleet to advance at 5 gu/s in formation, We will do the same. Zawaz's fleet moves at 2 gu/s and keeps those missles warm and toasty. Om my word, we advance to full flank speed. Everybody clear?" A round of "yessir!"s was heard, and Halsey was Sasitifed.

"Zawaz, my overbearing lord and senior" pronounced the intel officer. Zawaz stood up and adjusted his cape to make it flow better "Begin, peon." The other officers on the bridge held in their laughes, it was always good to stage a bit of fun to let the tension flow before a battle. "4th fleet just got into position. Our orders are to stay behind the fleet at 3 gu/s slower". The bridge crew fell silent. Rear Admiral Zawaz flung his hand dramaticaly, still playing the role "What?! They just got into position,
this is ludicrious! Contact the Zaandam, At once!" He watched his bridge crew scramble, and he sat down in his command chair, flanked by his helm officer and the XO of the ship. Admiral Halseys Face came on the view screen, and he blinked a bit bewildered and resumed his hardened glance "Rear Admiral Zawaz. Why the call?" Zawaz: "Sir, I must say that advancing already is a bit preposterous! The planet isn't even in correct rotational orbit yet, the missles on the surfice wo-" Halsey cut him off; "We vastly outnumber the ICC. Those rebels will never hold up to our well tested battle charge." More protest from Zawaz: "But, Sir! Shi is a ver-" Halsey's voice returned with anger: "Zawaz, Are you testing me boy? You have your orders. Remember your rank and place, Rear Admiral. Halsey. Out." The viewscreen turned off almost with a deafening mute silence. The bridge was silent, the tension could be cut with a laser knife. That idiot....does he like to waste his forces? Maybe the 4th fleet is here for a.......no he woudn't...would he? his mind said, thankful he didn't just commit insubordination

--Meanwhile...--

Sheng silently studied the lightboard. The most outer rim of sensor platforms detected enemy ships, then was silenced. The incomplete information sent revealed little of the enemy layout - 3 fleets, at least 1 with a Command Dreadnought. Individiual ship classes were attempted to be distuingished, but the chance of error was too high for mis calcuations. Somewhere between double to triple our fleet size, huh?... his mind spoke to nothing Even with this tactic, it might not work..... His eyes adjusted as the lightboard was re-updated with more information. The light underneath it had an odd ability to always shine directly into your retina, no matter what part of the 5 feet by 5 feet board it was updating. "Maybe thats the way it grabs my attention..." he mused. "What was that, sir?" asked a voice behind him. He turned around to find a curious look of an officer holding a small data storage device. "Just an old man musing, ensign." The ensign nodded, but said "You're not that old, sir". He outstretched his hand, and Sheng grabbed the datapad with a grin.

"Gee, Thanks." Sheng glanced at the datapad.

FROM: ADMIRAL THOMPSON
TO: ADMIRAL SHENG
ABOUT THAT BATTLE STRATEGY

As we're under battle situations, I didn't think an unencrypted voice communication would be appropriate. My sensor officer has told me that one of our fleets outer rim sensor platforms wasn't destroyed. Aparantly the enemy fleet didn't even bother to open fire on it. Enclosed is the data required for your sensor officer to enter in connect to it. Hope it helps.

Best Regards, Thompson.

----
<>

The rest of the note was garble, a datapad attempting to translate binary into readable text. Sheng looked up, realizing he had already subconsciouly walked over next to the sensor officer. He also realized the officer hadn't noticed him. Good, last thing I need is people thinking i'm being absentminded right now. "Lt Nikov, Could you key in this encryption key into our sensor platform subnet?" Sheng said, while at the same time deleting the note from Admiral Thompson. "Da, commandant, that vill be simple to do." He took the pad and connected it into his station and began typing. "Ze Lightboard vill update itself with the information soon." Sheng nodded, a useless gestuer, as the officer wasn't looking at him. He turned around and walked over to the lightboard.

Very little changed. It wasn't the wealth of information that would win him the battle - no you had to work for those. What it was, however, was information on the 4th Fleet. It had a....horrible was the only word he could use for it, formation and it didn't even seem to be progressing at the same rate - indeed even on the lightboard he could see certain ships adjusting their speeds.4th fleet...? If I remember correctly, their never was an officaly commisioned UGTO 4th fleet for this war. What exactly ...? Are these ships just converted civilian ships? He brought up additional information on the ships. Reading of the ships energy levels, hull size, and visible weapons were displayed, and compared to most the available intel on UGTO ships. Most of them were sorely outclassed for their hull size, and he had to agree that their training was somewhere between minimal and none.

Great...A bunch of civilian ships and civilians outfitted and rushed out the shipyard to help fight off "those rebels". Maybe I could convince them to our side?... A thought formed in his head, and he suddenly realized he had three plans to set off, and if they all worked in the right order....maybe he could win this one. But that would require a lot of luck.

He hoped he had enough today.

I notice a conspicuous lack of Star Wars parody in this one. I'm very disappointed.
