This is a draft sorta thing I did a few weeks ago, was meant to go in the history, but intsead, I thought it should go here.

The first EM weapon was designed to disable pirate ships just years after the Ragnarock incident. The first fusion torpedos were not fast and maneuverable enough to hit their target, and so an alternative was needed- a torpedo that disabled enemy ships without having to get near them. Hence the EMP Torpedo was designed. It was meant to set off an EMP in space near the enemy ship, and disable onboard computer systems. Unfortunately the design never left the test lab computers, as the simulations showed that although the design itself would work, the ship that launched it would also be affected by the detonated charge. This was deemed too high a risk, as the resources and technology needed to develop shielding against such damage was not considered cost effective.
The first large scale EM weapon, named the EMP Cannon, was put into design shortly after the period when ICC got hold of their much feared shielding system. This weapon was designed to hit larger ships in hope of disrupting their shield modulation, and allowing weapons to do more damage. The weapon also disabled the ships' systems by short circuiting them, as well as disabling their computer systems. The first EMP Cannon tests were a great success. Being based on the Particle Cannon designs, hardly any modifications where needed. The technology was also cheap, since it ran off the ships own power source and only needed a few specialized components to implement.
The UGTO governing council commissioned the Electro-Magnetic Research and Development Institute (EMRDI) to develop a new form of EMP weapon based around the chemical laser. The emphasis was placed on being easy to manufacture and cheap to develop. The early chemical beam weapons worked via compressed gas being vented at extremely high pressures and being superheated using a high powered laser array. This energy was then focused upon a contact, creating the beam. To create the beam it was necessary to ionize the vented gas so that it was able to conduct a charge, instead of superheating it. Once in contact with another vessel the directed beam could then deliver a massively disrupting pulse into the target. The resulting discharge would cause 'flux' in the targets shield systems and severely disrupt the operations of any other electrical components. Due to the highly efficient tracking systems that were an inherent part of the beam technology, the new weapons system was perfect for dealing with smaller ships.
Due to the success of the EM weapons project, the EMRDI decided to develop yet another EM weapon; this time, it was to cause devastating effects. The weapon was to be the ship itself. Early designs were to have a module inside the ship charge an EM pulse, and discharge it when ships were nearby; unfortunately the test results showed that this caused massive systems damage to the ship itself and would cause less to surrounding ships. The effects were just as bad if the module was mounted on the outside of the ship. A new way to stop the ship being damaged was needed. It was decided that the inner hull was to be polarized, and the armor charged with a massive EM generator, until forced to discharge into space. The tests showed that this would be a far safer and easier way to produce the EM-wave they sought after. Unfortunately, during tests, it was proven that the generator could only provide enough power quickly enough to generate a blast up to 250 galactic units away. There were plans for the drives to be directly linked to the generator for a more powerful version, but the simulation showed risks to be too high, and so plans were dropped all together

The word"FluxCannon" seems to be missing..that's what the "EMPlaserkindathingythatgenerateswhatever" should be ?

Very nice, it falls in line with a lot of the official fiction in The Universe Today =) One thing though, dates - make it a little more believable
