Somethings are annoying, some just make you worry, but this, makes no sense.
My external modem is being...weird. A lightning bolt probably no more than 500 feet from my home struck today, and hear a small crack come from my phone jack, no fluxuations, no reboots nothing. Just this crack.
Heres the weird thing, since this incident, my internet as usual resetted itself, however, my external modem now states that there is no dial tone.
Huh?
The computer reads the modem, it also states that the modem is in perfectly working condition, I decided to even query the modem to be sure it could still function properly, and that passed.
But it still wont dial.
All plugs plugged in, all lines connceted, and my phone line isnt to blame because Im using my comps internal modem for this (it royally sucks), with the same phone cord into the same jack, so it must be the modem.
I may try to reinstall the drivers and such to see if thats the problem (I doubt it), but it may seem I may need to get a replacement, but before I do so, im going to see what you all have to say.

Pick up the phone and listen to see if there is a dialtone.

Nope. dial tone present, note stated, using the same phone line for my software modem as I did my external one, meaning its not the phone line.

go into your modem props and take the tick off where it says wait for dail tone

I also tryed that. What was weird about it is that it didnt dial the number at all, and after about a minute, it gave the message "The remote computer did not respond." though trying the same number with this modem im using now (the one that sucks) it works. So this also does not help.

It fried the modem in some fashion, exactly what fashion... take it to a tech.

Yep you will find that it is DEAD ... just be thankful that it was an external and not an internal. The lightning strike could have fried your whole computer if it was

Ent that has happend to me 5 times in the pag the modom running during a strike the Dailing chip is Fried you'll need a new chip or just get a new modom.

I did a quick search of my database and the number of PC’s that I have fixed in the last 5 years that I can directly attribute to lightning strike come to 146
Ok what have we learned from this?
Don’t leave you pc connected to the wall or phone line in storm

Check that the number you are dialing is the correct one. Since there is no dial tone and the remote computer cannot be reached, that would be my first guess.

I've seen this a lot... The lightning blast, either hit the telephone lines (or if it was raining and wet enough the charge ran up the pole to the line) or close enough to charge the lines. This is why many old phone and computer books actually state disconnect everything from the lines and unplug your power cords during a lightning storm (or atleast get a surge protector with a modem and electrical connector with a rating of atleast 1850 Joules... Anything less than 1850 a lightning surge will jump and still fry your equipment).
The power came in and fried out the connector on the modem. But left the board untouched. Which is why you get it passing all tests, but fail to get a dial tone to the modem or beyond the modem with an attached phone to the line out.
You now have a rather nice little paper weight.
