so what exactly happens when server costs are not met for the month? Does the game go offline for a month? Or do one of the many volunteers for this game get roughed up for the spare change in their pocket?

There's a smudge factor in there (I won't mention how much) but we're a long ways off not meeting it (previous months have gone over 100% by some ways, so there's not an issue)).

On a more serious note ... we did fail to meet our goal for covering server costs last month, so we are in the red a bit. I'm hopeful we will get a new version out soon to hopefully make some people happy and get back into the black.
That said, I will seriously have to consider shutting down parts of all of the game if we fail to meet our financial goals next month. This may mean a much smaller/cheaper server or just shutting down the game.
So please, if you play the game, subscribe at the $4.99 a month at the very least to contribute to the continuation of DarkSpace.

There are several fairly major outstanding balance issues in the current version that haven't been resolved or even commented on by anyone on the development team for months. These issues make playing the game a lot less fun than it used to be, and this is the reason I cancelled my subscription. If a new version resolving or at least mitigating these issues is released, I will resubscribe.
