MI and Pirates would be well suited to be a strictly event handled event.
What I mean is, they wouldn't take planets like the main 3 factions do-
For MI, there could be semi-random portal events where they spawn from a destructible wormhole, and fly to the nearest planet to annihilate the population, tech and power.
These invaders would not have jump drives, and fly the way of the gaifen, so it would be possible to intercept them or set up a solid defense strategy.
Pirate events could take the form of static rogue bases that occasionally spawn out in deep space or somewhere in the gaps between planets, possibly not discovered until players backtrack where pirates are jumping in from.
Just some ideas... I realize it's easier to propose ideas than implement them... also nothing I said was based on me playing Rift recently... nope... not at all

Almost looks like Dr. Franken_Naboo has built something from parts from all three or even all five factions and critters in the MV..... Maybe the best from all..... It can be called the Frankenweinie_Naboo
