Why is the ICC Assault Frigate called the Assault Frigate when it's not really an assault ship?

Discuss.

People see it, and they jump it. So instead of saying "jump that frigate and kill it!", the other factions just say "assault frigate!" and there ya go.

Are most of the guns forward facing? That seems to be the running qualification for assault ship in ds....

Brilliant ship, can lay in the damage on high class ships.

I believe it has 2x heavy cannon (F/R, F/L), 2x cannon (R/R, R/L), 2x torp (F/R, F/L) 1x laser (full), pulse shield. Might've missed something since it's not a ship I normally fly.

Names on frigates and corvettes are a bit wacky.
For instance, UGTO has an assault corvette which is basically almost the same as the cannon ICC corvette.
Interceptor frigate has almost pure cannons, where you would think it was beams.

Etc.

Now that you mention the Assault Corvette, from what I was told it was originally supposed to be a beam Scout to take out other Scouts, but after testing it was found to really suck and the layout was changed. Even more of an oddity in that it's the only Scout without any sort of EW gadgets, though it does have an extra torpedo compared to the ICC Sensor Corvette.

Assault frigate has 4 weapons on the fore (2 HRG and 2 FT), 4 on the sides (HRG, 2 RG and FT) and 2 on aft (2 RG), giving it 6 fore (heavies count as double), 5 side and 2 rear arc weapon points. Since it does maximum damage at fore, it is assault ship.
It is also assault simply because it has torpedoes.

Interceptor frigate is an anti-ship frigate (unlike interceptor fighters meant to kill fighters AND missiles), meant to take down small ships quickly. Because it deals good and durable damage, it is an interceptor ship (6 fore, 6 sides and 2 rear arc weapon points).

Assault corvette is assault because it has torpedoes, and lasers can be mounted in numbers only on medium and large ships (read descrition of dreadnought in manual, "The massive generators of these ships allow placement of beam weapons in large numbers").

Now don't discuss why EAD is elite or TC is not assault (named unusually because other faction got same names). There is nothing in the name of a ship -_-

Don't forget that the smaller ships get, the more roles they can play (albeit on a smaller scale).

The name just reflects what it is "best" at out of all the roles that it can actually play.

That is just not true. The smaller the ship, the less gadgets, the more specific the role of the ship is. Match any frigate to any station, dread or cruiser. It just does't compare in versatility.

I consider it an assault frigate in that it exploits the formation-breaking effects of a larger assault ship. Allied assault cruisers and assault dreadnoughts break the enemy up, while assault corvettes and assault frigates use their speed to flank and their range to stay safe once there, dealing damage to the arcs the enemy is trying to keep away from the larger assault craft.
