What does the focus command do exactly? I have tried setting the focus on myself, and I don't see anything happening for the better/worse.

The Focus command lets you control how much of the space surrounding you is actively sent to your client in real-time.
For example: You will get diamonds for planets and any friendly ships (or enemy ships with a high enough signature) that are within 5000 GU of your ship - that is the default.
If you are on a low-speed connection or have an older computer, you may try lowering the focus to reduce lag (both through packets being sent to your computer and the amount of items that your computer must process on screen) by using the /focus command to set it to a lower level (like 3000).

It's not recommended you up this to 5000. A LOT of data during battles can be shunted around, and we're already seeing the server maxing out clients connections in some cases.
If you're on a slow connection, try /focus 1000. Otherwise, leave it as is.
